Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) is one of most promising paradigms that provide an effective solution to changes and uncertainties in a competitive manufacturing environment. A Reconfigurable Assembly System (RAS) is a key component of an RMS. In this paper, our survey on the development of RAS has been summarised. The objectives of this literature survey are to: • clarify the needs and drivers in developing reconfigurable assembly systems • identify both academic and practical issues critical to the development of reconfigurable assembly systems • understand the state of the art of R&D related to the studies on the critical issues read more read less

Traditionally, process planning and scheduling for parts were carried out in a sequential way, where scheduling was done after process plans had been generated. Considering the fact that the two functions are usually complementary, it is necessary to integrate them more tightly so that performance of a manufacturing system can be improved greatly. In this paper, we present a review of the reported research in Integrated Process Planning and Scheduling (IPPS), discuss the extent of applicability of various approaches and suggest some future research trends. read more read less

Signals generated by transient vibrations in rolling bearings due to structural defects are non-stationary in nature, and reflect upon the operation condition of the bearing. Consequently, effective processing of non-stationary signals is critical to bearing health monitoring. This paper presents a comparative study of four representative time-frequency analysis techniques commonly employed for non-stationary signal processing. The analytical framework of the short-time Fourier transform, wavelet transform, wavelet packet transform, and Hilbert-Huang transform are first presented. The effectiveness of each technique in detecting transient features from a time-varying signal is then examined, using an analytically formulated test signal. Subsequently, the performance of each technique is experimentally evaluated, using realistic vibration signals measured from a bearing test system. The results demonstrate that selecting appropriate signal processing technique can significantly affect defect identification and consequently, improve the reliability of bearing health monitoring. read more read less

The next-generation of small satellites ('nanosats') will feature masses <10 kg and require miniaturised propulsion systems capable of providing extremely low levels of thrust The emergence of viscous, thermal and/or rarefaction effects on the micro-scale can significantly impact the flow behaviour in supersonic micronozzles resulting in performance characteristics which differ substantially from traditional macro-scale nozzle designs In this paper, we provide an overview of key findings obtained from computational studies of supersonic micronozzle flow and discuss the implications for future micro-scale nozzle design and optimisation read more read less

The relative portability, reconfigurability and ease of installation make the iGPS suitable for many industries manufacturing large scale products. The system performance depends on both the components characteristics and their physical configuration. Hence, an important consideration for the iGPS is to characterise its real capabilities, pointing out how they can be influenced by the system's configuration and setup. In this paper, the system is introduced and the technical aspects are briefly described. Then, an initial test is performed to establish its repeatability, reproducibility and accuracy. read more read less
