The economic literature suggests several approaches to explain the differences of technological performances among nations, such as the varieties of capitalism's theory of innovation However, the relation between typologies of executive and technological performances of countries is generally absent in current frameworks Results of the study here show that high levels of technological performance of nations seem to be associated to executive with parliamentary monarchy and monarchy (leadership-oriented governments), whereas nations with mixed executive tend to have lower technological performances A possible reason of these results is that, in general, some typologies of executive leadership-oriented (eg, monarchy) support the political stability of countries with subsequent socioeconomic developmental paths over the long run Overall, then, this study shows that the structure of executives can be one of contributing factors that explains dissimilar patterns of technological innovation and socioeconomic growth of nations over time read more read less

This paper analyses the technical and Allocative Efficiency (AE) of tax offices, that is, the offices which deal with declarations, assessments, collection and disputed tax demands of individuals and companies at a local level, using data from offices in central and greater Lisbon. The objective of this paper is to study the technical and AE of Lisbon's tax offices in order to establish how far the Portuguese Government's policy is achieving its aims. We find that the results are, at best, mixed, leading us to conclude that the incentive regulation carried out by the Government's regulatory body, the Central Tax Authority (CTA), falls short of achieving its stated aims. Therefore, we propose a policy revision to enforce efficiency based on a governance environment framework. read more read less

This paper studies the links between public spending, good governance, and its outcomes which measured by performance of local governments. This paper aims to examine the effect of government spending and good governance on performance of local government and whether good governance can strengthen the effect of government spending on performance. This paper based on 1,044 observations of local governments in Indonesia from 2009 until 2012. This paper contributes by providing an understanding of the relationship between public spending, governance, and government performance and provides explanation of the mixed evidence that public spending often does not yield the expected outcomes. This research provides interesting empirical evidence that the expenditure of local government in Indonesia is inefficient in increasing performance. In the contrary, the result shows the negative effect of government spending on performance. The good public governance influenced positively toward performance and reduced the inefficiency of government spending. read more read less

Territorial marketing is a fundamental tool in the promotion of places, one that must be present in the strategies of local government representatives, helping and promoting a sustainable economic and social development of the regions. The increasing desertification serves as a basis of concern and object of study as feelings, causes, and motivations of change are at the beginning of the emigration chain. The purpose of this research is to act as a support tool in contexts of public marketing and governmental decisions and to understand the behaviour of the consumer and residents in Montalegre (Portugal). This research includes a non-probabilistic sample (129 validity and reliability surveys). Desertification is present in the minds of both inhabitants and interviewed visitors. It was possible to understand the perception of residents in Montalegre and assess the experience of visitors and the theoretical and practical contributions to local development and public marketing. Implications for future research are also presented. read more read less
