This paper seeks to review the political economy of the low-level equilibrium trap of slow growth in the Indian economy. Written in the context of Professor Bardhan's 1983 Radhakrishnan lectures, the review makes three sets of observ? ations. First, within the limits of his own analysis, Bardhan has left out a major pressure group, namely, the unionised labour. Secondly, he has under-estimated the economic and political role played by the small-scale industrialists and middle peasants in the political economy of Indian growth. Finally, his analysis in terms of the coalition of the dominant proprietory classes is a static relationship and lacks the historical dimension as to how and why the low level, slow growth equilibrium come about. It is argued that the economic system Bardhan talks about is not viable any more because it can no longer manage the old way the pressures and compulsions it has generated. read more read less

Applying the Johansen cointegration test, this study finds that energy consumption, economic growth, capital and labor are cointegrated However, this study detects no causality from energy consumption to economic growth using Hsiao's version of the Granger causality method with the aid of cointegration and error-correction modelling Interestingly, it is discerned that causality runs from economic growth to energy consumption both in the short run and in the long run and causality flows from capital to economic growth in the short run read more read less

Role of growth and distribution in the observed change in head count ratio measure of poverty: a decomposition exercise for India.
01 Jan 1990 - Indian economic review

Abstract:

This paper presents a method and analysis the results of decomposing the change in headcount ratio measure of poverty (CHR) between 1970-71 and 1983, separately for rural and urban population of 20 states, into two additive components, viz., one attributable to growth in real average per capita total expenditure (APCTE) (grow... This paper presents a method and analysis the results of decomposing the change in headcount ratio measure of poverty (CHR) between 1970-71 and 1983, separately for rural and urban population of 20 states, into two additive components, viz., one attributable to growth in real average per capita total expenditure (APCTE) (growth effect) and the other to a change in the relative size distribution of PCTE (distribution effect). Based on regression analysis an attempt is also made to explain inter-state variations in CHR with the help of growth in real APCTE and base-year headcount ratio and relate the residual from the regression equation to the distribution effect. read more read less

The world has continued to change rapidly since the last version of this article was written on May 20, 2020. Yet, as this article goes to press, we are aware of two realities; first, that we cannot perennially chase a moving target, but second, that nothing about the fundamental trends that we have identified appear to have changed. India is firmly in the throes of a vicious pandemic that we can only hope will abate with the development of an effective vaccine. Our plea for the widespread provision of adequate health and medical facilities, adequate protection for the elderly, and transfers to those severely affected by the lockdown are absolutely unchanged in the face of the latest data. In contrast, the brutal enforcement of a lockdown with none of these accompanying measures can only worsen outcomes for the poorest and most vulnerable among the population. read more read less

Foreign Portfolio Investment In Some Developing Countries: A Study of Determinants and Macroeconomic Impact
01 Jan 1997 - Indian economic review

The present study examines the determinants of foreign portfolio investment (FPI) and its impact on the national economy in six developing Asian countries. Regression results show that inflation rate, real exchange rate, index of economic activity and the share of domestic capital market in the world stock market capitalization are four statistically significant determinants of FPI. The first variable has a negative coefficient while the last three variables possess positive coefficients. Foreign direct investment, total foreign trade and current account deficit variables are found to be statistically insignificant. Regarding the impact of FPI on the national economies, it is found that the index of economic activities and inflation rate show an upward trend. Volatility in portfolio flows has not increased overtime. Ratio of foreign debt and debt-servicing to GDP has declined. But the rule of thumb regarding the issue of sustainability of FPI suggests that India and Indonesia have crossed the upper bounds of permissible debt ratios. read more read less
