Treating Trauma and Traumatic Grief in Children and Adolescents

Treating trauma and traumatic grief in children and adolescents by Cohen, Mannarino, and Deblinger describes what some consider the best available treatment for children who are suffering from the sequelae to trauma. The information offered in this book extends that which was presented in an earlier book and treatment manuals on trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy for traumatized children, childhood traumatic grief and children who have experienced sexual abuse written by the authors. Treating trauma and traumatic grief in children and adolescents extends upon earlier publications by including published research on traumafocused cognitive-behavioral therapy and more recent work that the authors have conducted with community-based practitioners. Importantly, the more recent collaborations with community practitioners have informed how trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy can be implemented with children from diverse cultural backgrounds and children with complex family situations. In terms of the empirical support, trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy has been shown to significantly reduce posttraumatic stress symptoms, depression, and behavior problems in children (Cohen, Deblinger, Mannarino, & Steer, 2004), and these treatment gains are maintained for at least two years (Deblinger, Steer, & Lippman, 1999). The treatment is also geared toward a fairly large age range. Treating trauma and traumatic grief in children and adolescents is divided into three sections. The first section read more read less

I MUST confess to being here today somewhat under false pretenses: since I am technically no longer in private practice. The ,Institute for Advanced Study in Rational Psychotherapy, vchich I direct, has recently organized a fullfledged psychological service center; and consequently I now see all my clients, for beth individual and group therapy, under the sponsorship of this center. However, although no longer a strictly private practitioner, my heart is still very much with the private practice of psychotherapy. For one thing, I see all my present clients on an outpatient basis; and although I have associates who occasionally take over my groups when I am out of town, I am largely an independent practitioner who takes full responsibility for all the people I see and who has a unique relationship with each of them. So I have as yet discovered no essential difference between the way I have operated at the center for the last year and the way I operated as a pure private practitioner for more than two decades before that ~ne. Rational-emotive therapy, moreover, is one of the many kinds of psychological treatment tha0t was devised in the course of a busy private practice. In fact, one of the main reasons for my developing it was the faot that I was beseiged with more clients than I could possibly care for when I practiced classical psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy, and I was virtually forced to look for more efficient and less time-consuming methods of seeing them. Moreover, even the most modem kind of analytic methods, as everyone knows, tend to be longer and more expensive than most middle-class clients and practically all less economically favored clients can afford; and I discovered many years ago that ff I were to engage in the private practice of psychotherapy with secretaries, students, clerical workers, bus drivers, read more read less

Internet addiction is a new and often unrecognized clinical disorder that can cause relational, occupational, and social problems. Pathological gambling is compared to problematic internet use because of overlapping diagnostic criteria. As computers are used with great frequency, detection and diagnosis of internet addiction is often difficult. Symptoms of a possible problem may be masked by legitimate use of the internet. Clinicians may overlook asking questions about computer use. To help clinicians identify internet addiction in practice, this paper provides an overview of the problem and the various subtypes that have been identified. The paper reviews conceptualizations of internet addiction, various forms that the disorder takes, and treatment considerations for working with this emergent client population. read more read less

Disruption of affectional bonds and its effects on behavior.

F AMILY DOCTORS, priests and perceptive laymen have long been aware that there are few blows to the human spirit so great as the loss of someone near and dear. Traditional wisdom knows that we can be crushed by grief and die of a broken heart, and also that a jilted lover is apt to do things that are foolish or dangerous to himself and others. It knows, too, that neither love nor grief are felt for just any other human being but for one, or a few, particular and individual human beings. The core of what I am terming an affeetional bond is the attraction that one individual has for another individual. Until recent decades science has had little to say about these matters. Experimental scientists in the physiological or Hullian learning theory traditions of psychology have never shown interest in affeetional bonds, and have sometimes talked and acted as though they do not exist. Psychoanalysts, by contrast, have long recognized the immense importance of affeetional bonds in the lives and problems of their patients, but have been slow to develop an adquate scientific framework within which the formation, maintenance and disruption of bonds can be understood. The void has been filled by ethologists--starting with Lorenz's (1) classical paper on The Companion in the Bird's World, progressing through a multitude of experiments on imprinting .(2, 3) to studies of bonding behavior in sub-human primates (4, 5), and inspiring psychologists to make similar studies of humans (6,7). read more read less

Addressing the Needs of Adolescents and Adults with Autism: A Crisis on the Horizon

The cohort of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosed as part of the first wave of what is often referred to as the autism epidemic is rapidly approaching adulthood. This cohort represents only the proverbial tip of the iceberg with some reports noting that 70% of the currently identified individuals with ASD are less than 14-years old. These numbers represent a looming crisis of unprecedented magnitude for adults with autism, their families, and the ill-prepared and underfunded adult service system charged with meeting their needs. A review of the current literature on outcomes for adults with ASD indicates that, independent of current ability levels, the vast majority of adults on the spectrum are either unemployed or underemployed and, further, that large numbers of adults with autism remain without any appropriate services. Many have had inadequate transition programming including little attention to service coordination, minimal direct family involvement and/or absence of treatment based on evidence-based practices. Lastly, issues related to staff and provider recruitment and retention present significant, systemic challenges to the provision of effective services. As such there is a significant and growing need for greater attention to individual needs of adults with ASD if we are provide the opportunity for a positive quality-of-life. read more read less
