TL;DR: In this article, the Laplace transform treatment is used to obtain exact solutions of the boundary layer equations for hydrodynamic and hydromagnetic boundary layer flows, including the effects of uniform suction or blowing, resonant and non-resonant frequencies.
Abstract: This paper provides a general study of the unsteady hydrodynamic and hydromagnetic boundary layer flows including the effects of the pressure gradient and uniform suction or blowing. Exact solutions of the boundary layer equations are obtained by using the Laplace transform treatment. Asymptotic analysis is carried out to determine the unsteady flow field for small and large times. The structure of the velocity distribution and the associated boundary layers is investigated for resonant and, non-resonant cases with physical significance. The ultimate steady-state hydrodynamic and hydromagnetic boundary layer flows are examined for various cases related to uniform suction or blowing, resonant and non-resonant frequencies. It is shown that the ultimate steady-state flows are eventually established through inertial oscillations and the propagation of diffused waves. The non-existence of the ultimate steady-state hydrodynamic solution for the case of resonance and blowing is investigated with physical significance. In the hydromagnetic situation, the ultimate boundary layer flow is found to exist for all cases involved in the problem including the case of blowing and resonance. Several special results of interest are discussed.

TL;DR: The vesicles of most of the nerve endings were ultrastructurally different from typical adrenergic and cholinergic vesicle, strongly suggesting the possibility of a third autonomic neurotransmitter serving as a regulator of catfish islet secretion.
Abstract: The endocrine pancreas of the bullhead catfish, Ictalurus nebulosus, and the channel catfish, I. punctatas was studied by light and electron microscopy. In addition to the usual A, B and D cells, a fourth endocrine cell type was consistently observed in the electron microscope. All endocrine cell types were innervated. The vesicles of most of the nerve endings were ultrastructurally different from typical adrenergic and cholinergic vesicles, strongly suggesting the possibility of a third autonomic neurotransmitter serving as a regulator of catfish islet secretion.

TL;DR: In this paper, an asymptotic analysis of the hydromagnetic flow in a semi-infinite expanse of an electrically conducting rotating viscous fluid bounded by an infinite non-conducting porous plate subjected to uniform suction or blowing in the presence of an external magnetic field is made.
Abstract: A study is made of the non-torsionally generated unsteady hydromagnetic flow in a semi-infinite expanse of an electrically conducting rotating viscous fluid bounded by an infinite non-conducting porous plate subjected to uniform suction or blowing in the presence of an external magnetic field. The structure of the steady and the unsteady velocity field and the associated multiple boundary layers are investigated. An asymptotic analysis of the solution is carried out for small and large times to describe the manner of the transient approach to the ultimate steady-state flow including the various physical processes involved in it. The difficulty of the hydrodynamic solution associated with the case of blowing and resonant frequency is resolved in this paper. It is shown that the oscillatory boundary layer flows confined to the ultimate boundary layers are established through the inertial oscillations and the propagation of diffused hydromagnetic waves.

TL;DR: In this article, the notions of a R-Hausdorff series and the T3-modification of a convergence space are introduced, and their relationship with the regularity series is studied.
Abstract: This study is a continuation of an earlier paper on the regularity series of a convergence space. The notions of a R-Hausdorff series and the T3-modification of a convergence space are introduced, and their relationship with the regularity series is studied. The concept of a symmetric space is shown to be useful in studying T3-compactifications. Several examples are given; one being a Hausdorff convergence space with an arbitrarily large regularity series.

TL;DR: Ten techniques often used for identification of A, B, and D cells in adult islets of Langerhans were applied to fetal rat pancreas and it was possible to distinguish the three usual cell types, plus a possible fourth type, in the fetal rat Pancreas.
Abstract: Ten techniques often used for identification of A, B, and D cells in adult islets of Langerhans were applied to fetal rat pancreas. Modifications were tried with many of these techniques. Two indole methods (xanthydrol and ptcoupled benxylidene reactions) and a crymtat technique using o-phthalaldehyde failed to stain fetal islets. Phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin and lead hematoxylin lightly stained fetal A cell granules in Hally's fixed tissue. The Grimelius silver nitrate technique stains adult rat A Celts but failed to stain fetal cells. A modification of this technique stained fetal A cells and a pomible 4th cell type. The specificity of this method was confirmed by re staining stained cells with a fluorescent antihody technique and with pseudoisocyanin. B cells, as previously reported, were readily stained by the aldehyde fuchsin technique. Fetal D cells were not stained by the Hellerstrom-Hellman alcoholic silver nitrate method, nor did they display pseudoisocyanin metachromasia after acid hydrolysi...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report the findings of a study of the relation of racial attitudes to interpersonal choice behavior among second grade school children, finding evidence of less racial bias and less frequent choice of Euro-associates in a racially balanced classroom than in a classroom which was predominantly Euro-American.
Abstract: This paper reports the findings of a study of the relation of racial attitudes to interpersonal choice behavior among second grade school children. Children (32 Euro-American and 20 Afro-American) who comprised two intact classrooms in an integrated public school were administered the Preschool Racial Attitude Measure (PRAM II) and a sociometric procedure which asked them to choose classmates as associates for three different activities. For all subjects, a correlation of .52 was obtained between the degree of pro-Euro/anti-Afro bias displayed on PRAM II and the frequency of choice of Euro-American associates. There was some evidence of less racial bias and less frequent choice of Euro-associates in a racially balanced classroom than in a classroom which was predominantly Euro-American. It was concluded that the study supported the validity of the PRAM II procedure as a method for assessing racial attitudes in young children.

TL;DR: In this article, a study of the unsteady hydromagnetic boundary layer flow induced by the torsional oscillations of an infinite disk in an electrically conducting rotating fluid in the presence of a uniform magnetic field is made.
Abstract: A study is made of the unsteady hydromagnetic boundary layer flow induced by the torsional oscillations of an infinite disk in an electrically conducting rotating fluid in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Some qualitative and quantitative information is obtained about i) the structure of the steady and the unsteady velocity field; ii) the existence of the hydrodynamic Rayleigh layer, the Ekman-Hartmann boundary layer and the Stokes-Ekman-Hartmann boundary layer with their physical implications; iii) the total transient time required for the establishment of quasi-steady hydromagnetic boundary layers; iv) the hydromagnetic Ekman suction velocity and its importance, and v) the significant interaction of the electromagnetic and Coriolis forces. It is shown that the rapid attainment of the quasi-steady Ekman-Hartmann and the Stokes-Ekman-Hartmann boundary layers and the striking properties of the Ekman suction velocity appear to play a distinctive role in the hydromagnetic spin-up mechanism. Special attention is given to the physical interpretation of the mathematical results obtained. The significant effects of the imposed magnetic field on the flow phenomena have also been investigated.

TL;DR: In this paper, a reduction of iron(II) 4,4′,4,4″,4.4′″-tetrasulfophthalocyanine (TSP) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on a mercury electrode has been examined.
Abstract: Electrochemical reductions of iron(II) 4,4′,4″,4′″-tetrasulfophthalocyanine (Fe(II)TSP) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on a mercury electrode have been examined. The iron compound was found to undergo two one-electron reductions (at -0.74 and -1.15 V vs. SCE respectively) to Fe(0) as verified by polarographic measurements. The course of reduction was followed by observing the spectral change in a combined optical-electrochemical cell. The influence of such extraplanar ligands as cyanide, pyridine, and imidazole, etc., on the half-wave potentials were also noted.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was pointed out that the principles involved in the latter are exactly those involved in simple linear equations, and that the fault may lie in the traditional division of equations into these types.
Abstract: WHEN teaching algebra or trigonometry courses to students, I have often been dis mayed by the fact that although my classes could easily solve equations like 3x + 2 = 5, even the better students could not begin to solve equations like + log (x 5) + 2 = 6. Yet the principles involved in the latter are exactly those involved in simple linear equations. Then it occurred to me that the fault may lie in the traditional division of equations into these types:

Abstract: The secretaries in community mental health centers have functions that transcend their job descriptions. Their performance of these functions contributes to the success or failure of their centers' therapeutic programs. The Mental Health Training Institute of North Carolina initiated two separate pilot training programs within 1971–1972, aimed at heightening the secretaries' appreciation of their role within their centers and at facilitating their integration into the therapeutic team. This paper is a discussion of the second of these two programs.

TL;DR: In this paper, a business or technical writing teacher can mitigate against pragmatic students' recalcitrance toward language studies by pointing out the utility of knowing how to write well, and motivate students more effectively by turning to compelling testimonials from leaders in business and industry, to appropriate personal experiences, and stimulating classroom strategies that emphasize the importance of language ability in career, social, and civic aspirations.
Abstract: The business or technical writing teacher can mitigate against his pragmatic students' recalcitrance toward language studies by pointing out the utility of knowing how to write well. However, rather than turning to hackneyed arguments or to literary evidence, he can motivate students more effectively by turning to compelling testimonials from leaders in business and industry, to appropriate personal experiences, and to stimulating classroom strategies that emphasize the importance of language ability in career, social, and civic aspirations. The lively use of such readily available resources can improve student attitude toward the course and should thus improve student performance.

Abstract: In this essay2 I intend to draw out something of the conceptions of the nature of political philosophy that are explicit or implied in the writings of A. N. Whitehead and Karl Marx. Such exposition is not meant to be exhaustive in detail but is offered as thematically sound. The end is a critical comparison upon which further suggestions can be based concerning the nature of political philosophy.

TL;DR: In this article, the steady-state flow field consists of two distinct boundary layers which are modified by the angular velocity of rotation, the elastic parameter and the frequency of the imposed oscillations.
Abstract: The unsteady boundary-layer flow generated in an incompressible, homogeneous elastico-viscous fluid bounded by an infinite rigid disk is investigated when the whole system is in a state of solid-body rotation with uniform angular velocity and, at some instant of time, the disk executes small-amplitude torsional oscillations with a given frequency The analysis is carried out to determine various qualitative and quantitative information about the unsteady and steady velocity distributions, the structure of the associated multiple boundary layers, the effects of the elastic parameter and rotation on the flow and the Ekman suction velocity with its physical significance It has been shown that the steady-state flow field consists of the two distinct boundary layers which are modified by the angular velocity of rotation, the elastic parameter and the frequency of the imposed oscillations Several known results of physical interest are recovered as special cases

TL;DR: Postmortem middle-ear explorations revealed that the incidence of otitis media increased from approximately 18% to 50% when rats maintained under normal clean conditions (NIH, 1968) reached the age of 6 months.
Abstract: Our article ℌOtitis media in laboratory ratsℍ (Daniel, Means, Dressel, & Loesche, 1973) was published as a precautionary note to researchers using rats for auditory research. In our article, postmortem middle-ear explorations revealed that the incidence of otitis media increased from approximately 18% to 50% when rats maintained under normal clean conditions (NIH, 1968) reached the age of 6 months. Based upon this observation and others reported in the same paper, we made the following recommedations for auditory researchers: (l)rats should be examined either by radiological methods (Grice et al, 1955) or by postmortem middle ear exploration, (2) younger rats should be used, (3) male rats should be used, and (4) brain surgery should be avoided when possible.
