TL;DR: In this paper, an empirical typology of police corruption derived from a content analysis of the literature (1960-1972) and the police work experience of one of the authors is presented.
Abstract: This paper postulates an empirical typology of police corruption derived from a content analysis of the literature (1960-1972) and the police work experience of one of the authors. Police corruption is analyzed as a form of organizational deviance hinging primarily on informal police peer group norms. Contradictions among formal norms, informal norms, and situational rules are indicated. Eight types of police corruption are delineated: (l) Corruption of Authority, (2) Kickbacks, (3) Opportunistic Theft, (4) Shakedowns, (5) Protection of Illegal Activities, (6) The Fix, (7) Direct Criminal Activities, and (8) Internal Payoffs. The types are analyzed along several dimensions: (1) acts and actors, (2) norm violations, (3) support from peer group, (4) organizational degree of deviant practices, and (5) police department's reactions.

TL;DR: Relative size estimates of populations of selected insect species on ‘Bragg’ soybeans were determined from four 15-in.
Abstract: Relative size estimates of populations of selected insect species on ‘Bragg‘ soybeans were determined from four 15-in. sweepnet and one groundcloth-shake sampling techniques. Comparing relative estimates to absolute populations, the groundcloth-shake sampling method was the most efficient method for sampling lepidopterous larvae. This method has a low relative variation and a high fidelity to population changes but was time consuming. Sweeping upwards against the foliage of one row was the most efficient method for sampling adult Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster) and adults and nymphs of Spissitilus festinus (Say).

TL;DR: This paper is aimed at exploring graphical methods which allow rapid and informative analysis of water quality data and seeks to not only present a graphical representation of the data, but also to explain variations and interrelationships within the data itself.
Abstract: Management of our nation's water resources through planning and control of water pollution hinges on the availability and interpretation of water quality data on which to base management decisions. This paper is aimed at exploring graphical methods which allow rapid and informative analysis of water quality data. The graphical methods presented in this paper fall into two main categories. The first category relates to graphical procedures which are developed as part of a statistical test, such as discriminant analysis. The second category involves approximation of multivariate water quality data into two dimensions. The methods for accomplishing the latter are canonical decomposition and high-dimensional plotting. Each of these methods is developed and used on an example set of data to demonstrate their utility. These methods seek to not only present a graphical representation of the data, but also to explain variations and interrelationships within the data itself.

TL;DR: Of the protein amino acids, alanine, glycine and glutamic acid were found to be present in the highest concentrations, and contrary to pervious reports, glutamine was not found as the major constituent of the various tissues.
Abstract: 1. 1. Free amino acids and related compounds were determined in serum, liver, muscle, gill, gut tract, kidney, heart, brain and spleen tissues of fasting cultured channel catfish. 2. 2. Taurine and ammonia were the major constituents of all tissues studied. 3. 3. In general, the liver and kidney contained the highest concentration, expressed as μmoles/g tissue, of most of the amino acids and related compounds. However, on a per cent distribution of the total pool sizes, the muscle tissue containes by far the largest percentage of almost all compounds studied. 4. 4. Of the protein amino acids, alanine, glycine and glutamic acid were found to be present in the highest concentrations. Contrary to pervious reports, glutamine was not found as the major constituent of the various tissues.

TL;DR: In this paper, the competitive chelation hypothesis was used to explain the chlorosis of newly developing needles in Sitka spruce and Scots pine, which was partially alleviated when additional Fe was supplied as FeEDDHA and there was a slight decrease in organic anions.
Abstract: Nitrate-N was an inferior source of N for both Sitka spruce and Scots pine, resulting in lower dry weights and moderate chlorosis of newly developing needles. The NO3-N source resulted in a greater cation concentration in the tissues and a greater organic anion content as measured by the difference in inorganic cations and inorganic anions. Chlorosis was partially alleviated when additional Fe was supplied as FeEDDHA and there was a slight decrease in organic anions (C-A). It is suggested that the chlorosis might be explained by the competitive chelation hypothesis which states that the activity of the Fe is reduced by metals or various ligands, in this case by the excess organic anions produced by NO3-N nutrition.

TL;DR: In this paper, the species composition, standing stock, and net primary aerial production of a salt marsh community in St. Louis Bay Estuary, Mississippi were analyzed using square meter quadrat samples harvested monthly during 1971 to 1972.
Abstract: Square meter quadrat samples harvested monthly during 1971 to 1972 provided data on the species composition, standing stock, and net primary aerial production of a salt marsh community in St. Louis Bay Estuary, Mississippi. Although a total of 34 species of marsh plants were identified,Juncus roemerianus, Spartina cynosuroides, Scirpus americanus andDistichlis spicata were found to be the most dominant in all the quadrats sampled. Maximum biomass of alive, dead, and partially decayed plants were observed in July, August and January respectively. Community annual net production estimated by harvest method was 1051 g dry wt m−2 or 5012 ash-free Kcal m−2. Total biomass obtained by reharvesting previously clipped quadrats in various ages of regrowth revealed a seasonal pattern of growth rate with a maximum during late summer and a productivity estimation of 1108 g dry wt m−2 or 5541 ash-free Kcal m−2.

TL;DR: A systematic program for interspecific cotton breeding in Mississippi began in 1952 and the objective was to transfer new or improved properties from wild species to Upland cotton, which furnishes most of the world's cotton fiber.
Abstract: A systematic program df interspecific cotton breeding in Mississippi began in 1952. The objective was to transfer new or improved properties from wild species to Upland cotton. Even at this early period in history, biological resistance to cotton pests was a major goal. We have grown 28 species of Gossypium as greenhouse or field plants; sixteen of these species have been crossed with Upland cotton, twelve species are represented in breeding material that can be handled in field plots, and cytoplasms from seven species have been transferred into strains that can be handled by routine methods in Upland cotton breeding programs. Upland cotton, G. hirsutum L., furnishes most of the world's cotton fiber. A closely related species, G. barbadense L., includes the long-fibered Sea Island and Egyptian cottons. Both of these species were cultivated in the Americas for centuries before Columbus sailed across the Atlantic. Both of these species are tetraploid. Two diploid species, G. herbaceum and G. arboreum L., are native to Africa and Asia. These have also been used for textiles over a very long period of time. In addition to the four cultivated species, there are about 25 short-fibered or lintless wild diploid species scattered over the subtropical deserts of the world, and also one wild tetraploid Hawaiian species with very short brown lint. Fortunately for people doing interspecific cotton breeding, all tetraploid

TL;DR: The toxicity of parathion and methylParathion to organochlorine compound-resistant and -susceptible populations of mosquitofish is determined and the resistant population demonstrates a 1.3 fold greater tolerance of methyl parathions than the susceptible population, which may be a developing resistance.
Abstract: This study determined the toxicity of parathion and methyl parathion to organochlorine compound-resistant and -susceptible populations of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). Mosquitofish can tolerate about 40 times more methyl parathion than parathion. The resistant population demonstrates a 1.3 fold greater tolerance of methyl parathion than the susceptible population, which may be a developing resistance. The resistant population also demonstrates an environmentally-induced tolerance to parathion (1.6 fold) in the spring but no overall tolerance to parathion in the fall when compared to the susceptible population.

TL;DR: A comparative analysis of the available models for coliform organisms indicated that a deterministic model was best suited for total coliform and a statistical model wasbest suited for fecal coliform.
Abstract: The use of models for predicting changes in water quality parameters is currently considered an integral part of river basin management. The application of modeling techniques to coliform organisms is in its infancy due to the complexities involved and the lack of definitive information on coliform populations in natural environments. The purpose of this study was to make a comparative analysis of the available models for coliform organisms in order to improve on the state of the art of this subject. The available coliform models may be classified into deterministic or statistical types. In this study, six different models, three of each type, were selected for analysis and were applied to coliform data available on the Leaf River. Results of comparing the models indicated that a deterministic model was best suited for total coliform and a statistical model was best suited for fecal coliform. Ultimate selection of a model for coliform organisms is dependent not only on the accuracy of the model but on ease of implementation. Current technology would probably dictate the use of a deterministic model because of the lack of a complete data base on which to base statistical models.

TL;DR: Long-Evans female rats were subjected to a variety of olfactory-system lesions and compared with septally damaged and operated-control Ss in terms of handling characteristics, muricidal behavior, and behavior toward rat pups.
Abstract: Long-Evans female rats were subjected to a variety of olfactory-system lesions and compared with septally damaged and operated-control Ss in terms of handling characteristics, muricidal behavior, and behavior toward rat pups. Damage to the olfactory bulb rostral to the frontal poles resulted in increased mouse killing without changes in E-directed behavior. Additional damage under the frontal lobes increased both emotional behavior and mouse killing. Olfactory tubercle damage unaccompanied by olfactory bulb removal failed to produce either increased emotionality or mouse killing. A trend toward an increase in rat pup killing was noted in rats sustaining olfactory bulb damage. Finally, rats with septal damage, although extremely difficult to handle, did not display increased muricidal behavior.
