TL;DR: Until recently, northern Bering Sea ecosystems were characterized by extensive seasonal sea ice cover, high water column and sediment carbon production, and tight pelagic-benthic coupling of organic production, but it is shown that these ecosystems are shifting away from these characteristics.
Abstract: Until recently, northern Bering Sea ecosystems were characterized by extensive seasonal sea ice cover, high water column and sediment carbon production, and tight pelagic-benthic coupling of organic production. Here, we show that these ecosystems are shifting away from these characteristics. Changes in biological communities are contemporaneous with shifts in regional atmospheric and hydrographic forcing. In the past decade, geographic displacement of marine mammal population distributions has coincided with a reduction of benthic prey populations, an increase in pelagic fish, a reduction in sea ice, and an increase in air and ocean temperatures. These changes now observed on the shallow shelf of the northern Bering Sea should be expected to affect a much broader portion of the Pacific-influenced sector of the Arctic Ocean.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed a measure of parental stress, the Parental Stress Scale (PSS), which is a generic measure of stress called the perceived stress scale, relevant measures of emotions and role satisfaction (e.g. loneliness, marital satisfaction, guilt, etc.).
Abstract: The development of a measure of parental stress, the Parental Stress Scale, is presented. All participants (total N = 1276) completed the Parental Stress Scale and some also completed the Parenting Stress Index, a generic measure of stress called the Perceived Stress Scale, relevant measures of emotions and role satisfaction (e.g. loneliness, marital satisfaction, guilt, etc.), and one group completed the Parental Stress Scale twice. Analyses suggested that the Parental Stress Scale is highly reliable, both internally and over time, and related to the general measure of stress. Also, results were consistent across parents of differing parental characteristics, suggesting the stability of scale characteristics. The validity of Parental Stress Scale scores was supported by predicted correlations with measures of relevant emotions and role satisfaction and significant discrimination between mothers of children in treatment for emotional/behavioral problems and developmental disabilities vs mothers of childre...

TL;DR: These findings support wider use of antigen–specific CTLs in adoptive immunotherapy and restore cellular immune responses against EBV, but also established populations of CTL precursors that could respond to in vivo or ex vivo challenge with the virus for as long as 18 months.
Abstract: Adoptive transfer of antigen-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) offers safe and effective therapy for certain viral infections and could prove useful in the eradication of tumor cells. Whether or not the infused T cells persist for extended periods, retaining their ability to expand in response to antigenic stimulation, is not known. We now report long-term detection of gene-marked Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-specific CTLs in immunocompromised patients at risk for the development of EBV lymphoproliferative disease. Infusions of CTLs not only restored cellular immune responses against EBV, but also established populations of CTL precursors that could respond to in vivo or ex vivo challenge with the virus for as long as 18 months. Our findings support wider use of antigen-specific CTLs in adoptive immunotherapy.

TL;DR: The controversial hypothesis that the ALH84001 meteorite contains relics of ancient martian life has spurred new findings, but the question has not yet been resolved as discussed by the authors, but this controversy continues to help define strategies and sharpen tools that will be required for a Mars exploration program focused on the search for life.
Abstract: The controversial hypothesis that the ALH84001 meteorite contains relics of ancient martian life has spurred new findings, but the question has not yet been resolved. Organic matter probably results, at least in part, from terrestrial contamination by Antarctic ice meltwater. The origin of nanophase magnetites and sulfides, suggested, on the basis of their sizes and morphologies, to be biogenic remains contested, as does the formation temperature of the carbonates that contain all of the cited evidence for life. The reported nonfossils may be magnetite whiskers and platelets, probably grown from a vapor. New observations, such as the possible presence of biofilms and shock metamorphic effects in the carbonates, have not yet been evaluated. Regardless of the ultimate conclusion, this controversy continues to help define strategies and sharpen tools that will be required for a Mars exploration program focused on the search for life.
