Abstract: We present a simple explanation for the occurrence of power-law tails in statistical distributions by showing that if stochastic processes with exponential growth in expectation are killed (or observed) randomly, the distribution of the killed or observed state exhibits power-law behavior in one or both tails. This simple mechanism can explain power-law tails in the distributions of the sizes of incomes, cities, internet files, biological taxa, and in gene family and protein family frequencies.

Abstract: Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is caused by a somatic mutation in the gene PIGA, which encodes an enzyme essential for the synthesis of glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchors. The PIGA mutation results in absence or marked deficiency of more than a dozen proteins on PNH blood cells. Current flow cytometric assays for PNH rely on the use of labeled antibodies to detect deficiencies of specific GPI anchor proteins, such as CD59. However, because no single GPI anchor protein is always expressed in all cell lineages, no one monoclonal antibody can be used with confidence to diagnose PNH. We describe a new diagnostic test for PNH, based on the ability of a fluorescently labeled inactive variant of the protein aerolysin (FLAER) to bind selectively to GPI anchors. We compared GPI anchor protein expression in 8 patients with PNH using FLAER and anti-CD59. In all cases, FLAER detected similar or higher proportions of PNH monocytes and granulocytes compared with anti-CD59. Because of the increased sensitivity of detection, FLAER could detect small abnormal granulocyte populations in patients to a level of about 0.5%; samples from healthy control subjects contained substantially fewer FLAER-negative cells. FLAER gives a more accurate assessment of the GPI anchor deficit in PNH.

Abstract: ATLAS has measured two-particle correlations as a function of relative azimuthal-angle, $\Delta \phi$, and pseudorapidity, $\Delta \eta$, in $\sqrt{s}$=13 and 2.76 TeV $pp$ collisions at the LHC using charged particles measured in the pseudorapidity interval $|\eta|$<2.5. The correlation functions evaluated in different intervals of measured charged-particle multiplicity show a multiplicity-dependent enhancement at $\Delta \phi \sim 0$ that extends over a wide range of $\Delta\eta$, which has been referred to as the "ridge". Per-trigger-particle yields, $Y(\Delta \phi)$, are measured over 2<$|\Delta\eta|$<5. For both collision energies, the $Y(\Delta \phi)$ distribution in all multiplicity intervals is found to be consistent with a linear combination of the per-trigger-particle yields measured in collisions with less than 20 reconstructed tracks, and a constant combinatoric contribution modulated by $\cos{(2\Delta \phi)}$. The fitted Fourier coefficient, $v_{2,2}$, exhibits factorization, suggesting that the ridge results from per-event $\cos{(2\phi)}$ modulation of the single-particle distribution with Fourier coefficients $v_2$. The $v_2$ values are presented as a function of multiplicity and transverse momentum. They are found to be approximately constant as a function of multiplicity and to have a $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ dependence similar to that measured in $p$+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions. The $v_2$ values in the 13 and 2.76 TeV data are consistent within uncertainties. These results suggest that the ridge in $pp$ collisions arises from the same or similar underlying physics as observed in $p$+Pb collisions, and that the dynamics responsible for the ridge has no strong $\sqrt{s}$ dependence.

Abstract: Received 25 October 2008; revised 3 April 2009; accepted 7 May 2009; published 22 August 2009. [1] Northern peatlands and permafrost soils are associated with large carbon stocks. Rising temperatures are likely to affect the carbon balance in high-latitude ecosystems, but to what degree is uncertain. We have enhanced the Lund-Potsdam-Jena (LPJ) dynamic global vegetation model by introducing processes necessary to simulate permafrost dynamics, peatland hydrology, and peatland vegetation. The new version, LPJ-WHy v1.2, was used to study soil temperature, active layer depth, permafrost distribution, and water table position. Modeled soil temperatures agreed well with observations, apart from a Siberian site where the soil is insulated by an extensive shrub layer. Water table positions were generally in the range of observations, with some exceptions. Simulated active layer depth showed a mean absolute error of 44 cm when compared to observations, but the error was reduced to 25 cm when the soil type for seven sites was manually corrected to mirror local conditions. A sensitivity test, in which temperature and precipitation were varied independently, showed that soil temperatures and active layer depths increased more under higher temperatures when precipitation was increased at the same time. The sensitivity experiment suggested persisting wet conditions in peatlands even under temperature increases of up to 9C as long as annual precipitation is allowed to increase with temperature to the extent indicated by climate model experiments.
