Factors affecting quality of life in lower limb amputees

TLDR
In this study, employment status, use of an assistive device,Use of a prosthesis, comorbidities, phantom-limb pain and residual stump pain were found to predict both PCS and MCS scores significantly, and explained 47.8% and 29.7% of variance respectively.
Abstract
Background: Quality of life (QoL) is increasingly being recognized as an important outcome for rehabilitation programs, and has mainly been used to compare the efficacy of interventions or to compare amputees with other diseased populations. There is relatively a limited number of studies primarily focusing on analyzing the multitude of factors influencing QoL in amputees. Objectives: To identify important background and amputation related factors which affect quality of life (QoL) in lower limb amputees, and to compare QoL profile of amputees’ to that of general population.Study design: Cross-sectional.Methods: Lower limb amputees 18 years and above from a rehabilitation centre, a limb-fitting centre and four limb-fitting camps were interviewed (n = 605). Structured questionnaires included patient background and amputation characteristics, and the MOS short-form health survey (SF-36) for assessing QoL. The SF-36 was administered to a general adult population using purposive sampling (n = 184).Results: SF-...

Pharmacologic interventions for treating phantom limb pain.

TL;DR: The results for gabapentin in terms of pain relief were conflicting, but combining the results favoured treatment group (gabapentin) over control group (placebo) over long-term results, based on adverse event data, while the results for calcitonin were variable.

Online Phase Detection Using Wearable Sensors for Walking with a Robotic Prosthesis

TL;DR: A comparison of the proposed method to an off-line trained algorithm using hidden Markov models reveals a similar performance achieved without the need for learning dataset acquisition and previous model training.

Prophylactic Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interfaces to Prevent Postamputation Pain.

TL;DR: Prophylactic regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces in major limb amputees resulted in a lower incidence of both symptomatic neuromas and phantom limb pain compared with control patients undergoing amputation without regenerativeipheral nerve interfaces, suggesting that prevention of peripheral neuromas following amputation may diminish the central pain mechanisms that lead to phantom limbPain.

Health-related profiles of people with lower limb loss.

TL;DR: Health indicator profiles are an efficient way of providing clinically meaningful information about numerous aspects of self-reported health in people with lower limb loss and a normative sample and to compare health indicators between subgroups based on level and etiology of limb loss.

Genetic and molecular basis of diabetic foot ulcers: Clinical review.

TL;DR: Clinically, interventions which have improved outcomes for people with DFUs or those at risk of DFUs include some systemic therapeutic drug interventions which improve microvascular blood flow, surgical interventions, human growth factors, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

SF-36 health survey update.

Jr. John E. Ware
- 15 Dec 2000 -
TL;DR: The SF-36 (Medical Outcomes Trust, Boston, MA) is a multipurpose, short-form health survey with only 36 questions, which yields an eight-scale profile of scores as well as physical and mental health summary measures as mentioned in this paper.

Overview of the SF-36 Health Survey and the International Quality of Life Assessment (IQOLA) Project

TL;DR: Information is presented about the development and evaluation of the SF-36 Health Survey, a 36-item generic measure of health status, that summarizes studies of reliability and validity and provides administrative and interpretation guidelines for theSF-36.

Estimating the prevalence of limb loss in the United States: 2005 to 2050.

TL;DR: The sensitivity of the projections to increasing or decreasing incidence was investigated, and alternative sets of estimates of limb loss related to dysvascular conditions based on assumptions of a 10% or 25% increase or decrease in incidence of amputations for these conditions were developed.

Comparison of methods for the scoring and statistical analysis of SF-36 health profile and summary measures: summary of results from the Medical Outcomes Study

TL;DR: Results suggest that the two summary measures may be useful in most studies and that their empiric validity, relative to the best SF-36 scale, will depend on the application.
