New Literacies: Everyday Practices and Classroom Learning

Academic literacies research has developed over the past 20 years as a significant field of study that draws on a number of disciplinary fields and subfields such as applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, anthropology, sociocultural theories of learning, new literacy studies and discourse studies. Whilst there is fluidity and even confusion surrounding the use of the term ‘academic literacies’, we argue in this paper that it is a field of enquiry with a specific epistemological and ideological stance towards the study of academic communication and particularly, to date, writing. To define this field we situate the emergence of academic literacies research within a specific historical moment in higher education and offer an overview of the questions that the research has set out to explore. We consider debates surrounding the uses of the singular or plural forms, academic literacy/ies, and, given its position at the juncture of research/theory building and application, we acknowledge the need for strategic as well as epistemological and ideological understandings of its uses. We conclude by summarising the methodological and theoretical orientations that have developed as ‘academic literacies’, conceptualised as a field of inquiry, has expanded, and we point to areas that merit further theoretical consideration and empirical research.

Defining academic literacies research: issues of epistemology, ideology and strategy

User interfaces are becoming more intuitive following the requirements of the individual learner and reinforcing the drive towards more personalised learning and greater learner autonomy. There are clearly a new set of challenges emerging for teaching practitioners that will have implications upon not just what is learned but importantly upon lesson planning. This paper explores these changes to teaching through a consideration of an exploratory learning model which allows practitioners to rethink how they teach in 3D and immersive spaces where learning sequences and experiences are choreographed to support peer interactions and exchanges. The ELM extends from Kolb's experiential learning model to adapt the use of 3D applications, and provides examples from research and development projects to exemplify how the model works in practice. Teaching in these contexts provides less emphasis upon curriculum and more emphasis upon sequencing learning experiences, meta-reflection, peer assessment and group work.

This book "samples" work in the broad area of new literacies research on two levels.
First, it samples some typical examples of new literacies. These are video gaming,
fan fiction writing, weblogging, using websites to participate in affinity practices,
and social practices involving mobile computing. The question of what it is
about these practices that makes us think of them as "new" and as "literacies" will
occupy much of this introductory chapter.
Second, it samples from among the wide range of approaches potentially available
for researching and studying new literacies. The studies assembled in this collection
are all examples of what is referred to as research undertaken from a
sociocultural perspective on literacy. New literacies can be studied from a range of
research and theoretical orientations (cf Leu et al. forthcoming). For reasons that
will become apparent from our account of "new literacies," however, a sociocultural
perspective is especially appropriate and valuable for researching new literacies.
