The Brazilian Atlantic Forest:: how much is left and how is the remaining forest distributed? Implications for conservation

TLDR
In this paper, the authors quantify how much of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest still remains, and analyze its spatial distribution, and suggest some guidelines for conservation: (i) large mature forest fragments should be a conservation priority; (ii) smaller fragments can be managed in order to maintain functionally linked mosaics; (iii) the matrix surrounding fragments, and (iv) restoration actions should be taken, particularly in certain key areas.

Global Biodiversity: Indicators of Recent Declines

Stuart H. M. Butchart, +46 more
- 28 May 2010 -
TL;DR: Most indicators of the state of biodiversity showed declines, with no significant recent reductions in rate, whereas indicators of pressures on biodiversity showed increases, indicating that the Convention on Biological Diversity’s 2010 targets have not been met.

Cracking Brazil's Forest Code

TL;DR: This work quantifies changes resulting from the FC revisions in terms of environmental obligations and rights granted to land-owners and discusses conservation opportunities arising from new policy mechanisms in the FC.

Global patterns of terrestrial vertebrate diversity and conservation.

TL;DR: A snapshot of how well the planet’s protected area system encompasses vertebrate biodiversity is provided, with substantial differences between the identified vertebrate priorities and the leading map of global conservation priorities, the biodiversity hotspots.

The measurement of observer agreement for categorical data

TL;DR: A general statistical methodology for the analysis of multivariate categorical data arising from observer reliability studies is presented and tests for interobserver bias are presented in terms of first-order marginal homogeneity and measures of interob server agreement are developed as generalized kappa-type statistics.

Effects of Habitat Fragmentation on Biodiversity

TL;DR: In this article, the authors suggest that the term "fragmentation" should be reserved for the breaking apart of habitat, independent of habitat loss, and that fragmentation per se has much weaker effects on biodiversity that are at least as likely to be positive as negative.

Systematic Conservation Planning

TL;DR: A more systematic approach to locating and designing reserves has been evolving and this approach will need to be implemented if a large proportion of today's biodiversity is to exist in a future of increasing numbers of people and their demands on natural resources.

Edge effects in fragmented forests: implications for conservation

TL;DR: Although estimates of the intensity and impact of edge effects in fragmented forests are urgently required, little can be done to ameliorate edge effects unless their mechanics are better understood.
