The main goal of the nationhood education is to instill the sense of loyalty and passion into the nation. In a Malaysian context, several academic subjects at higher education such as Malaysian Studies, Ethnic Relations and National Language have been implemented in order to achieve the goal. Malaysian Study is one of the compulsory courses offered by all private universities in Malaysia that is intended to educate students with national values, patriotism and belongingness to the country. However, past empirical evidence show that many students have a lack of interest to learn such subject. Therefore, the current study investigated contributing factors to students’ academic achievement and also examined students’ attitudes towards that subject. Using quantitative approach, the current study categorized four main factors namely the suitability and interest in syllabus, being active in class, early preparation and revision, types of enjoyable activities, interest in teaching aids and good class attendance. Using questionnaires and SPSS software as the main tools in this study, the mean score, frequency and percentage were obtained. It is concluded statistically from this study that students’ perception of their lecturers play a significant role in determining their learning outcomes in Malaysian Studies, while the lecturers are of the opinion that learning environment is a factor which contributes significantly to the students’ achievement in this subject. The current study suggests that the teachers build upon excellent rapport with students and create an attractive and enjoyable environment to get the students to dynamically involve in the classroom activities and learn the Malaysian Studies enthusiastically and efficiently.

Students’ Attitudes and Their Academic Performance in Nationhood Education

This study aims to evaluate the levels of professional competency among high school teachers as well as to identify the differnces based on gender and work experience, as the teachers’ professional competency level is of paramount importance in quality of teaching and learning and students’ achievements The study sample involved 327 teachers from various fields randomly selected from 12 schools in Pekanbaru, Indonaisia The study used test with 33 questions to measure the teachers’ professional competency Overall results show that the level of professional competencies is generally at an average level The result shows that there is significant difference between female and male teachers in terms of mastery of professional competency In addition, the data shows that there is significant difference between more experienced and less experienced teachers regarding mastery of professional competency The implication is that the program, run by schools or ministery of education, to implement to upgrade the professional competency of teachers should consider the teachers’ backgrounds to make sure its effectiveness

Professional Competency Differences among High School Teachers in Indonesia

Affirmative Action policy and Labour Market Structure: Evidence from Saudi Arabia

The aim of this study was to identify teachers view in relation with the implementation of Lesson Study, a program of professional development for teachers. An action research was conducted by using a questionnaire to gauge teachers’ acceptance of Lesson Study. The sample consisted of 40 teachers from High Schools (SMA) in Indonesia were recruited for this study. The implementation of Lesson Study involves four stages: planning, micro teaching, discussion and reflection. For the pilot study, Cronbach's Alpha reliability for the items ranges from 0.82 to 0.93. The results showed that Chemistry and English teachers’ acceptance of Lesson Study program is high compared with the teachers of other subjects which is moderate. For the aspects of differences in the acceptance of Lesson Study program based on different fields, there was no significant difference between the teachers of Science and Social Science. The overall results showed that acceptance and understanding about Lesson Study program was still at a moderate level. The study also found that professional development program through Lesson Study program enables subject teachers to be monitored each other through the concept of collaborative work in improving pedagogical skills. The results showed that the expansion of the teaching process through Lesson Study program can be used as a program for teachers’ professional development. There are significant differences among the perspectives of teachers teaching different subjects about Lesson Study. However, all teachers showed good perception in relation to the implementation of Lesson Study. It is proposed that Lesson Study is used as an alternative approach to solve the problems that the teachers are facing in the implementation of teaching and learning.

The Implementation of Lesson Study Programme for Developing Professionalism in Teaching Profession

The aim of this study was to evaluate and validate language learning strategies used by excellent students based on gender, socio-economy, types of school, and academic background in the English Studies Programme at Riau University, Pekanbaru. This study investigates students’ reading strategies in terms of memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective and social. This study comprehensively investigates excellent students’ learning strategies in reading. One hundred and one subjects who are studying and doing well in the English Education programme were recruited for this study. The data were analyzed using a descriptive statistic with min. For this study the data were collected using questionnaire to explore the learning strategies of excellent students. A pilot study was conducted to increase the reliability of the instrument used and was assessed using cronbach alpha and value was between 0.82 and 0.91. The findings show different language learning strategies among the students based on gender, ethnic group, parents' income, and academic results in secondary school. It was found that there was no significant difference in learning strategies among excellent students based on types of school. This study This finding has important implications for various parties in educational sector to cooperate in their effort to develop and improve the students' learning strategies in order to produce quality human capital.

Malaysian Secondary School History Curriculum and Its Contribution towards Racial Integration

Harmony and enjoyment at workplace have a positive influence on commitment, work productivity and loyalty to the organization. Therefore, this study aims to identify the level of harmony that consists of the dimensions of self-motivation, external motivation, physical environment, psychosocial and personal health among IPG Campus lecturers in Penninsular Malaysia. This study also aims to identify the differences level of harmony based on demographic factors (gender, age, academic qualifications and service duration) among the lecturers. Data was collected by a cross-sectional survey through the Teacher Institution's Well-being Questionnaire (TIWEQ) constructed by the researchers. The questionnaire had also been tested for the validity and reliability. A total of 857 samples were involved in this study. The findings of the study showed that the level of harmony among IPG campus lecturers in Peninsular Malaysia is at a high level of 53.2 percent (n = 456). Based on the dimensions, it was found that the highest mean value is the self-motivation dimension (M = 3.68, SD = 0.38) while the lowest mean value is the personal health dimension (M = 2.79, SD = 0.59). This finding contributes to the field of knowledge that the importance of balance between external and internal harmony for the sustainability of the education system. In addition, it is also necessary to create a harmony profile for each IPG.
