Knots are determined by their complements

TL;DR: The notion of equivalence of knots can be strengthened by saying that K and K' are isotopic if the above homeomorphism h is isotopic to the identity, or equivalently, orientation-preserving as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reducing heegaard splittings

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that if a Heegaard splitting of a nonsufficiently large 3-manifold has the property that there exist essential disks, one in each of the two handlebodies, whose boundaries are disjoint, then the splitting is reducible.
Journal ArticleDOI

Knots and links in spatial graphs

TL;DR: It is shown that any embedding of K7 in three-dimensional euclidean space contains a knotted cycle and that any embedded cycle of K6 contains a pair of disjoint cycles which are homologically linked.
