Methods of nonlocal density functional theory (NLDFT), proposed recently for predictions of adsorption equilibrium and calculations of pore size distributions in micro- and mesoporous materials, were tested on reference MCM-41 materials. Five newly synthesized MCM-41 adsorbents with presumably uniform pore channels varying from 32 to 45 A were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption at 77 K, and argon adsorption at 77 and 87 K. New sets of intermolecular interaction parameters of the NLDFT model for N2 and Ar adsorption on MCM-41 were determined. The parameters were specified to reproduce the bulk liquid-gas equilibrium densities and pressures, liquid-gas interfacial tensions, and standard adsorption isotherms on nonporous surfaces in the multilayer adsorption region. The pore size distributions calculated from the desorption branches of the experimental isotherms measured at three different temperatures were consistent with each other. Comparison of the NLDFT-calculated pore sizes with XRD data showed that the thickness of pore walls in the MCM-41 samples under consideration varied from ca. 6 to 12 A. We found no correlation between the pore size and the pore wall thickness. The results obtained support the NLDFT model as a suitable tool for characterizing nanoporous materials and predicting adsorption equilibrium. Honey is a natural sweetener with a complex composition. Honey features vary depending on the botanical source and geographical origin, as well as climatic, processing and storage conditions. Honey is mainly composed of carbohydrates and water, parameters that influence its shelf life and some of its properties, including color, flavor, density, viscosity, hygroscopicity, and crystallization. Honey also contains small amounts of other components, such as nitrogen compounds, organic acids, minerals, vitamins, Maillard reaction products, volatile compounds, and several bioactive substances that affect sensory and physical characteristics, as well as biological potential. This review summarizes the literature about the composition and main properties of honey. It also describes the use of honey as a biomonitor for collecting information about the environment, identifying environmental contamination and assessing the level of soil, water, plant and air pollution.

Controls on the spatial and temporal variability of vadose dripwater geochemistry: Edwards aquifer, central Texas

This paper concerns an issue in the metaphysics of properties. The issue is: what are physical properties? What distinguishes physical properties from all other properties? My conclusions will be ‘downbeat’. I will argue that some major recent approaches to this issue prove unsatisfactory, and that the issue is much more intractable than has widely been supposed. The moral I draw is that there is no principled and well-defined distinction between physical properties and all other properties, and accordingly certain programmes in metaphysics should be abandoned because they mistakenly assume that there is such a distinction.
