Light sources based on reliable and energy-efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are instrumental in the development of solid-state lighting (SSL). Most research efforts in SSL have focused on improving both the intrinsic quantum efficiency (QE) and the stability of light emitters. For this reason, it is broadly accepted that with the advent of highly efficient (QE close to 1) and stable emitters, the fundamentalresearchphaseofSSLiscomingtoanend.Inthisstudy,wedemonstrateaverylargeimprovementinSSLemission(above 70-fold directional enhancement for p-polarized emission and 60-fold enhancement for unpolarized emission) using nanophotonic structures. Plasmonics for solid-state lighting: enhanced excitation and directional emission of highly efficient light sources

We demonstrate experimentally that arrays of base-tapered InP nanowires on top of an InP substrate form a broad band and omnidirectional absorbing medium. These characteristics are due to the specific geometry of the nanowires. Almost perfect absorption of light (higher than 97%) occurs in the system. We describe the strong optical absorption by finite-difference time-domain simulations and present the first study of the influence of the geometry of the nanowires on the enhancement of the optical absorption by arrays. Cylindrical nanowires present the highest absorption normalized to the volume fraction of the semiconductor. The absolute absorption in layers of conical nanowires is higher than that in cylindrical nanowires but requires a larger volume fraction of semiconducting material. Base-tapered nanowires, with a cylindrical top and a conical base, represent an intermediate geometry. These results set the basis for an optimized optical design of nanowire solar cells.

Strong Geometrical Dependence of the Absorption of Light in Arrays of Semiconductor Nanowires

We review the properties of the surface waves that are scattered by two-dimensional sub-wavelength indentations on metallic surfaces. We show that two distinct waves are involved, a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) and a quasi-cylindrical wave (quasi-CW). We discuss the main characteristics of these waves, their damping characteristic lengths and their relative excitation weights as a function of the separation distance from the indentation and as a function of the metal conductivity. In particular we show that derive a closed-form expression for the quasi-CW, which clarifies its physical origin and its main properties. We further present an intuitive microscopic model, which explains how the elementary SPPs and quasi-CWs exchange their energies by multiple-scattering to build up a rich variety of near- and far-field optical effects.

A microscopic view of the electromagnetic properties of sub-wavelength metallic surfaces

Controlling the launching efficiencies and the directionality of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and their decoupling to freely propagating light is a major goal for the development of plasmonic devices and systems. Here, we report on the design and experimental observation of a highly efficient unidirectional surface plasmon launcher composed of eleven subwavelength grooves, each with a distinct depth and width. Our observations show that, under normal illumination by a focused Gaussian beam, unidirectional SPP launching with an efficiency of at least 52% is achieved experimentally with a compact device of total length smaller than 8 μm. Reciprocally, we report that the same device can efficiently convert SPPs into a highly directive light beam emanating perpendicularly to the sample.

Compact Antenna for Efficient and Unidirectional Launching and Decoupling of Surface Plasmons

A microscopic view of the electromagnetic properties of sub-λ metallic surfaces

We present a comparison among several fully-vectorial methods applied to a basic scattering problem governed by the physics of the electromagnetic interaction between subwavelength apertures in a metal film. The modelled structure represents a slit-groove scattering problem in a silver film deposited on a glass substrate. The benchmarked methods, all of which use in-house developed software, include a broad range of fully-vectorial approaches from finite-element methods, volume-integral methods, and finite-difference time domain methods, to various types of modal methods based on different expansion techniques.
