X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is a non-destructive imaging technique originally designed for diagnostic medicine, which was adopted for rhizosphere and soil science applications in the early 1980s. X-ray CT enables researchers to simultaneously visualise and quantify the heterogeneous soil matrix of mineral grains, organic matter, air-filled pores and water-filled pores. Additionally, X-ray CT allows visualisation of plant roots in situ without the need for traditional invasive methods such as root washing. However, one routinely unreported aspect of X-ray CT is the potential effect of X-ray dose on the soil-borne microorganisms and plants in rhizosphere investigations. Here we aimed to i) highlight the need for more consistent reporting of X-ray CT parameters for dose to sample, ii) to provide an overview of previously reported impacts of X-rays on soil microorganisms and plant roots and iii) present new data investigating the response of plant roots and microbial communities to X-ray exposure. Fewer than 5% of the 126 publications included in the literature review contained sufficient information to calculate dose and only 2.4% of the publications explicitly state an estimate of dose received by each sample. We conducted a study involving rice roots growing in soil, observing no significant difference between the numbers of root tips, root volume and total root length in scanned versus unscanned samples. In parallel, a soil microbe experiment scanning samples over a total of 24 weeks observed no significant difference between the scanned and unscanned microbial biomass values. We conclude from the literature review and our own experiments that X-ray CT does not impact plant growth or soil microbial populations when employing a low level of dose (<30 Gy). However, the call for higher throughput X-ray CT means that doses that biological samples receive are likely to increase and thus should be closely monitored.

Effects of X-ray dose on rhizosphere studies using X-ray computed tomography

Evaluation of the nontraumatic acute abdomen with multidetector CT has long been accepted and validated as the reference standard in the acute setting. Dual-energy CT has emerged as a promising tool, with multiple clinical applications in abdominal imaging already demonstrated. With its ability to allow characterization of materials on the basis of their differential attenuation when imaged at two different energy levels, dual-energy CT can help identify the composition of internal body constituents. Therefore, it is possible to selectively identify iodine to assess the enhancement pattern of an organ, including the identification of hyperenhancement in cases of inflammatory processes, or ischemic changes secondary to vascular compromise. Quantification of iodine uptake with contrast material-enhanced dual-energy CT is also possible, and this quantification has been suggested to be useful in differentiating inflammatory from neoplastic conditions. Dual-energy CT can help determine the composition of gallstones and urolithiasis and can be used to accurately differentiate uric acid urinary calculi from non-uric acid urinary calculi. Moreover, dual-energy CT is capable of substantially reducing artifacts caused by metallic prostheses, to improve the imaging evaluation of abdominopelvic organs. The possibility of creating virtual nonenhanced images in the evaluation of acute aortic syndrome, gastrointestinal hemorrhage and ischemia, or pancreatic pathologic conditions substantially reduces the radiation dose delivered to the patient, by eliminating a true nonenhanced acquisition. Finally, by increasing the iodine conspicuity, contrast-enhanced dual-energy CT can render an area of free active extravasation or endoleak more visible, compared with conventional single-energy CT. This article reviews the basics of dual-energy CT and highlights its main clinical applications in evaluation of the nontraumatic acute abdomen. ©RSNA, 2019.

Dual-Energy CT in Evaluation of the Acute Abdomen

Aim of this study was to assess the artifact reduction in patients with orthopedic hardware in the spine as provided by (1) metal-artifact-reduction algorithms (O-MAR) and (2) virtual monoenergetic images (MonoE) as provided by spectral detector CT (SDCT) compared to conventional iterative reconstruction (CI). In all, 28 consecutive patients with orthopedic hardware in the spine who underwent SDCT-examinations were included. CI, O-MAR and MonoE (40–200 keV) images were reconstructed. Attenuation (HU) and noise (SD) were measured in order to calculate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of paravertebral muscle and spinal canal. Subjective image quality was assessed by two radiologists in terms of image quality and extent of artifact reduction. O-MAR and high-keV MonoE showed significant decrease of hypodense artifacts in terms of higher attenuation as compared to CI (CI vs O-MAR, 200 keV MonoE: −396.5HU vs. –115.2HU, −48.1HU; both p ≤ 0.001). Further, artifacts as depicted by noise were reduced in O-MAR and high-keV MonoE as compared to CI in (1) paravertebral muscle and (2) spinal canal—CI vs. O-MAR/200 keV: (1) 34.7 ± 19.0 HU vs. 26.4 ± 14.4 HU, p ≤ 0.05/27.4 ± 16.1, n.s.; (2) 103.4 ± 61.3 HU vs. 72.6 ± 62.6 HU/60.9 ± 40.1 HU, both p ≤ 0.001. Subjectively both O-MAR and high-keV images yielded an artifact reduction in up to 24/28 patients. Both, O-MAR and high-keV MonoE reconstructions as provided by SDCT lead to objective and subjective artifact reduction, thus the combination of O-MAR and MonoE seems promising for further reduction.

X-ray μCT investigations of the effects of cleat demineralization by HCl acidizing on coal permeability

When too few photons reach detector elements, strong streaks appear through paths of high X-ray attenuation and an image becomes completely useless. This photon starvation artifact phenomenon occurs frequently when a pelvis or shoulder is scanned with thin slices. The common understanding regarding photon starvation streaks is that they are a manifestation of irregularities caused by noise in the raw data profile. Therefore, the common countermeasure is local raw-data filtering, which detects and smoothes out the highly noisy part of the raw data. However, the photon starvation artifact can be solved only partly with such a method and a more effective solution is necessary. Here, we examined the mean level shift of raw data attributable to the nonlinear nature of logarithmic conversion, which is the process required for generating raw data from detected X-ray data. We judge that the real culprit of the photon starvation artifact is this mean level shift. When the noise level is very high or the photon level is very low, this mean level shift can become prominent and can become manifest as thick streaks against which the conventional local raw data filtering has no power. To solve this problem, we propose a new scheme of local raw data filtering, which consists of reverting log-converted raw data to a form that is equivalent to pre-log detector data. With this method, not only fine streaks, but also thick streaks are removed effectively. A better image quality with lower X-ray doses is possible with this method.
