This article presents a novel ultra-wideband (UWB) miniaturized integrated antenna based on composite right/left-handed (CRLH) metamaterial (MTM) transmission lines (TLs). The antenna design is based on implementing the new inductive and capacitive components such as the spiral and rectangular inductors along with the metallic via holes and the engraved L and T-shaped slits that are constructed by the MTM technology and the standard manufacturing techniques on the engraved circuit board (ECB). With applying the proposed methods for designing the aforementioned components with proper and tuned dimensions the desirable specifications, i.e. size reduction, bandwidth extension and good radiation properties are provided. The antenna physical size is 22.6 mm × 5.8 mm × 0.8 mm or 0.037 λ 0  × 0.009 λ 0  × 0.001 λ 0 in terms of free space wavelengths at f  = 0.5 GHz. Novel UWB miniaturized integrated antenna based on CRLH metamaterial transmission lines

Two planar antennas based on metamaterial unit-cells are designed, fabricated, and tested. The unit-cell configuration consists of H-shaped or T-shaped slits and a grounded spiral. The slits essentially behave as series left-handed capacitance and the spiral as a shunt left-handed inductance. The unit-cell was modeled and optimized using commercial 3D full-wave electromagnetic simulation tools. Both antennas employ two unit-cells, which are constructed on the Rogers RO4003 substrate with thickness of 0.8 mm and er = 3.38. The size of H-shaped and T-shaped unit cell antennas are 0.06λ0 × 0.02λ0 × 0.003λ0 and 0.05λ0 × 0.02λ0 × 0.002λ0, respectively, where λ0 is the free-space wavelength. The measurements confirm the H-shaped and T-shaped unit-cell antennas operate across 1.2-6.7 GHz and 1.1-6.85 GHz, respectively, for voltage standing wave ratio VSWR < 2, which correspond to fractional bandwidth of ~140% and ~ 145%, respectively. The H-shaped unit-cell antenna has gain and efficiency of 2-6.8 dBi and 50-86%, respectively, over its operational range. The T-shaped unit-cell antenna exhibits gain and efficiency of 2-7.1 dBi and 48-91%, respectively. Metamaterial-based antennas for integration in UWB transceivers and portable microwave handsets

This letter presents the experimental results of a novel planar antenna design which is synthesized using simplified composite left/right-handed transmission-line (SCRLH-TL), which is a version of a conventional composite left/right handed-transmission-lines (CRLH-TL), however, with the omission of shunt-inductance in the unit-cell. SCRLH-TL exhibits a right-handed response with nonlinear dispersion properties and a smooth Bloch-impedance distribution. Arranged within the inner slot of the antenna are three smaller rectangular patch radiators. Each patch radiator is embedded with an E-shaped notch, and located in the antenna conductor is a larger E-shaped notch next to the 50-Ω termination. The E-shaped notches constitute SCRLH-TL property. The gap in the slot between the smaller patches and the conductor next to the larger E-shaped notch determines the impedance bandwidth of the antenna. The dimensions of the smaller patches determine the radiation characteristics of the antenna. The antenna is excited using a conductor-backed coplanar waveguide transmission-line. The antenna covers a bandwidth of 7.3 GHz between 0.7 GHz and 8GHz, which corresponds to 167.81%. In this band, the antenna resonates at 4.75 GHz and 7 GHz; the gain and radiation efficiency at these frequencies are 4 dBi—80% and 3.6 dBi—73%, respectively. The antenna's performance was validated through measurement. The antenna has dimensions of 0.0504λ0 × 0.0462λ0 × 0.0018λ0, where λ0 is free-space wavelength at 700 MHz.

New Compact antenna based on simplified CRLH‐TL for UWB wireless communication systems

This study describes the design of a metamaterial planar antenna for multi-octave band operation. The metamaterial unit-cell comprises L-shaped slit which is etched inside a rectangular patch with a grounded inductive spiral. The slit essentially behaves as a series left-handed capacitance and the spiral as a shunt left-handed inductance. The antenna was modelled and optimised for impedance bandwidth, gain and efficiency performance using commercial three-dimensional full-wave electromagnetic simulation tools. The antenna has a measured impedance bandwidth of 6.02 GHz for S 11<−10 dB. This corresponds to a fractional bandwidth of 172.49%, which is higher than multiband planar antennas reported to date. The antenna has a maximum gain and efficiency performance of 3.7 dBi and 73%, respectively, at 3.25 GHz. The physical footprint of the antenna is comparable to other wideband planar antennas reported to date. The overall size of the antenna is 0.037λ 0 × 0.027λ 0 × 0.002λ 0 and 0.25λ 0 × 0.18λ 0 × 0.017λ 0, where λ 0 is free-space wavelength at 0.48 and 3.25 GHz, respectively.

Miniaturised planar-patch antenna based on metamaterial L-shaped unit-cells for broadband portable microwave devices and multiband wireless communication systems

In this paper, an intensive study is proposed to recycle the organic materials use for microwave applications including RF-energy harvesting. Thus, the Iraqi Palme Tree Remnants (IPTR) is exemplified for this study to create dielectric substrates. The main texture of the fabricated substrates is IPTR mixed with Nickel Oxide Nanoparticles (NONP) hosted in Polyethylene (PE) to be called INP substrates. Nevertheless, a metamaterial (MTM) printed antenna on the proposed substrate is fabricated by material printer with Sliver Nanoparticles Conductive Ink (SNPCI). The antenna performance is tested numerically/experimentally in terms of S11 spectrum and radiation patterns. It is found excellent matching bandwidths at 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequencies with acceptable gains of 1.56 dBi and 2.48 dBi, respectively. The proposed antenna bandwidth is found to start from 2.4 GHz up to more than 10 GHz. The maximum achieved gain and efficiency are found about 3.456 dBi and 78% at 9 GHz. For this, the proposed antenna provides novel performance with ultimate antenna size reduction due to the introduction of the MTM based the proposed INP substrate. Finally, the harvested RF energy by the fabricated antenna is measured and found about 15 mV with a conversation efficiency of 85% at 2.45 GHz and 17.5 mV with a conversion efficiency of 91% at 5.8 GHz.

Printed planar patch antennas based on metamaterial

Design and fabrication of a traveling-wave printed planar composite right/left-handed (CRLH) antenna are presented in this paper. The proposed traveling-wave antenna constructed of four unit cells with b-shaped geometries, which each occupy 2.49 mm length, 6.32 mm width, and 0.8 mm height. In this paper, with designing the optimized b-shaped printed planar structure by the standard manufacturing techniques on the printed circuit boards, which perform the roles of the series left-handed (LH) capacitances (CL), the antenna size, bandwidth, and radiation specifications may be improved to the desirable range. Also, to obtaining the desired results the spiral inductors have been used, which play the roles of the shunt LH inductances (LL). The fabricated antenna with the proposed structure can be covered more from 2 GHz measured impedance bandwidth with minimum of the measured gain and radiation efficiency equal to 6.1 dBi and 52.3%, respectively, which happen at 9 GHz. According to the provided results, the proposed compact ultra-wideband traveling-wave antenna is a potential candidate to use in the embedded electronic systems and portable wireless communication devices.

A new compact UWB traveling-wave antenna based on CRLH-TLs for embedded electronic systems

In this framework, novel ultra wideband (UWB) small antennas based on the composite right/left- handed transmission lines structures are proposed and designed. The antennas are presented with best in size, bandwidth and radiation patterns. The physical size and the operational frequency of the antennas depend on the unit cell size and the equivalent transmission line model parameters of the CRLH-TL. To realize specifications of the proposed antennas, Q-shaped gaps, which are incised into rectangular radiation patches, are used. The first CRLH antenna is composed of two unit cells, each of which occupies only 10.8 mm × 8.6 mm. This antenna covers the bandwidth from about 2.7-9.3 GHz for VSWR <2. The antenna radiation gains and efficiencies, obtained by ADS, HFSS and CST Microwave Studio simulators, are more than 4 dBi and 25%, respectively. Moreover, second CRLH antenna with same in size and enhancement in bandwidth, gains and efficiencies than the first antenna with similar design procedure is designed. This antenna is constructed of four unit cells. The length, width and height of the antenna are 21.6 mm, 8.6 mm and 1.6 mm, respectively, and this antenna covers bandwidth from almost 4-11.7 GHz for VSWR <2, also radiation gains and efficiencies, achieved with mentioned simulators, are more than 6 dBi and 45%, respectively.
