Journal ArticleDOI
Histological assessment of cartilage repair: a report by the Histology Endpoint Committee of the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS).
Pierre Mainil-Varlet,Thomas Aigner,Mats Brittberg,Peter Bullough,Anthony P. Hollander,Ernst B. Hunziker,Rita A. Kandel,Stefan Nehrer,Kenneth P.H. Pritzker,Sally Roberts,Edouard Stauffer +10 more
TL;DR: Articular cartilage is a narrow layer of specialized connective tissue that permits smooth, frictionless movement of diarthrodial joints that is distinguished by the shape of the chondrocytes and the arrangement of type-II collagen fibers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Age related changes in human articular chondrocyte yield, proliferation and post-expansion chondrogenic capacity
Andrea Barbero,Shawn P. Grogan,Dirk Schäfer,Michael Heberer,Pierre Mainil-Varlet,Ivan Martin +5 more
TL;DR: Medium supplementation with the growth factor combination TFP during chondrocyte expansion supports higher proliferation rates at any age and higher post-expansion chondrogenic capacity in donors up to 40 years, which may be relevant for chondROcyte-based cartilage repair procedures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Autologous osteochondral grafting in the knee: indication, results, and reflections.
TL;DR: The use of multiple autologous osteochondral plugs (mosaicplasty) for repair of articular cartilage defects is a well-accepted technique but the method is limited by the defect size and the number of plugs to be taken at the donor site.
Journal ArticleDOI
Immunophenotypic analysis of human articular chondrocytes: changes in surface markers associated with cell expansion in monolayer culture.
Jose Diaz-Romero,Jean Philippe Gaillard,Shawn P. Grogan,Dobrila Nesic,Thomas Trub,Pierre Mainil-Varlet +5 more
TL;DR: This research focused on the characterization of the surface molecule phenotype of HACs in monolayer culture and provides new potential markers to characterize chondrocyte differentiation stage in the context of tissue engineering applications.
Journal ArticleDOI
Early osteoarthritic changes of human femoral head cartilage subsequent to femoro-acetabular impingement
S Wagner,Willy Hofstetter,Matthias Chiquet,Pierre Mainil-Varlet,E Stauffer,Reinhold Ganz,Klaus A. Siebenrock +6 more
TL;DR: The aberrant nonspherical portion of the femoral head in young patients with an impingement conflict consists of hyaline cartilage which shows clear degenerative signs similar to the findings in osteoarthritic cartilage, which substantiates an impedement conflict as an early mechanism for degeneration at the hip joint periphery.
