Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review the literature in the field of performance measurement and management (PMM) for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and large companies and propose a research agenda for the future.Design/methodology/approach – This paper provides an update of Neely's work “The evolution of performance measurement research” The literature review has been carried out by using two different methodologies. Citation/co‐citation analysis has been used to explore “performance measurement” (PM) literature, while a chronological review of main frameworks/models developed both for large and small companies is presented in order to highlight “PMM” literature.Findings – The paper analyzes the literature on the field and carries out the most cited works and the common characteristics of them based on the key words used. Performance measurement and management: a literature review and a research agenda

Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methods are widely used in various fields and disciplines. While most of the research has been focused on the development and improvement of new MCDA methods, relatively limited attention has been paid to their appropriate selection for the given decision problem. Their improper application decreases the quality of recommendations, as different MCDA methods deliver inconsistent results. The current paper presents a methodological and practical framework for selecting suitable MCDA methods for a particular decision situation. A set of 56 available MCDA methods was analysed and, based on that, a hierarchical set of methods' characteristics and the rule base were obtained. This analysis, rules and modelling of the uncertainty in the decision problem description allowed to build a framework supporting the selection of a MCDA method for a given decision-making situation. The practical studies indicate consistency between the methods recommended with the proposed approach and those used by the experts in reference cases. The results of the research also showed that the proposed approach can be used as a general framework for selecting an appropriate MCDA method for a given area of decision support, even in cases of data gaps in the decision-making problem description. The proposed framework was implemented within a web platform available for public use at www.mcda.it.

A casual analysis of the impact of information systems and supply chain management practices on operational performance : evidence from manufacturing SMEs in Turkey

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop an integrated balanced scorecard (BSC) analytical hierarchy process (AHP) approach for supply chain management (SCM) evaluation. It aims to measure SCM performance from the following four perspectives: finance, customer, internal business process, and learning and growth.Design/methodology/approach – The BSC is developed in the paper based on an extensive review of literature on SCM performance measures, supported by AHP analysis.Findings – The paper develops a BSC for SCM evaluation and proposes a method to prioritize the different performance levels in any organization using AHP methodology. Practice of information systems: Evidence from select Indian SMEs

The findings in the paper are reported on the basis of the outcome of sponsored research project on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Effective Performance Measurement System (PMS) for organisation is a key factor for success in today's competitive globalised market. In the era of globalisation and outsourcing, SMEs understand and acknowledge the importance of the performance measurement system in day-to-day business operations but may not able to pay serious attention to it. This paper presents results of a survey of Indian SMEs whilst addressing this issue. The study included SMEs from three western states of India covering the manufacturing, high tech engineering, finance, packaging, and distribution sector. Responses from 147 SMEs are analysed for various issues related to performance measurement system.
