Journal ArticleDOI
Lipids of oleaginous yeasts. Part I: Biochemistry of single cell oil production.
TL;DR: In the first part of this review, the biochemistry of lipid accumulation in the oleaginous microorganisms is depicted, as preferential degradation of the neutral lipid fractions is observed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lipid production by Yarrowia lipolytica growing on industrial glycerol in a single-stage continuous culture.
TL;DR: Yarrowia lipolytica LGAM S(7)1 presented remarkable growth on industrial glycerol used as sole carbon substrate whilst fat-free material yield increased over the whole range of D (h(-1)).
Journal ArticleDOI
Valorization of industrial waste and by-product streams via fermentation for the production of chemicals and biopolymers
Apostolis A. Koutinas,Anestis Vlysidis,Daniel Pleissner,Nikolaos Kopsahelis,Isabel Lopez Garcia,Ioannis K. Kookos,Seraphim Papanikolaou,Tsz Him Kwan,Carol Sze Ki Lin +8 more
TL;DR: It is evident that fermentative production of chemicals and biopolymers via refining of waste and by-product streams is a highly important research area with significant prospects for industrial applications.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biotechnological valorisation of raw glycerol discharged after bio-diesel (fatty acid methyl esters) manufacturing process: Production of 1,3-propanediol, citric acid and single cell oil
Seraphim Papanikolaou,Seraphim Papanikolaou,Stylianos Fakas,Stylianos Fakas,Michel Fick,Isabelle Chevalot,Maria Galiotou-Panayotou,Michael Komaitis,Ivan Marc,George Aggelis +9 more
TL;DR: Fatty acid analysis of total cellular lipids showed that glycerol concentration increase in the growth medium somehow increased the cellular unsaturated fatty acids content of lipids.
Journal ArticleDOI
Control of Lipid Accumulation in the Yeast Yarrowia lipolytica
Athanasios Beopoulos,Zuzana Mrozova,Zuzana Mrozova,Marie Therese Le Dall,Ivan Hapala,Seraphim Papanikolaou,Thierry Chardot,Jean-Marc Nicaud +7 more
TL;DR: A genomic comparison of Yarrowia lipolytica and Saccharomyces cerevisiae indicates that the metabolism of Y. lipolyTica is oriented toward the glycerol pathway, which contains six acyl-coenzyme A oxidases that catalyze the limiting step of peroxisomal β-oxidation.
