The aim of this paper is to survey the state-of-the-art of injury biomechanics in vehicle-pedestrian collisions, including the dynamic responses, injury mechanisms, tolerance levels, injury criteria and parameters that have relevance for injuries in different loading conditions. A condensed overview is given based on the published and ongoing studies in pedestrian injury biomechanics. The need for future research on pedestrian injury prevention is presented. read more read less

Seven post-mortem human surrogates were tested under identical conditions in full-scale vehicle-pedestrian impact experiments using a mid-sized sedan. The ability of a geometric scaling technique to predict the response of a mid-sized pedestrian from the responses of pedestrians of other statures was evaluated. Pedestrian kinematic response to sedan impacts was shown to be sensitive to the pelvis and hood interaction, which was largely determined by the height of the pelvis relative to the hood leading edge. The scaling method was shown to be not sufficient to predict mid-sized pedestrian response in impacts with the test vehicle used in this study. read more read less

A non-invasive method has been developed to study and analyse the critical geometric characteristics of living human skulls based on CT scan images. The CT scan images were obtained from patients who were admitted to the hospital and needed a head CT scan diagnosis. The A-P length and breadth of the whole skull, the thickness of the frontal, parietal and occipital bones of 3000 living skulls were analysed in this study. The results have shown that the average thicknesses of the frontal, parietal and occipital bones were (in mm) 6.58, 5.37 and 7.56, respectively, for the male; and 7.48, 5.58 and 8.17, respectively, for the female. The A-P length and breadth of the skull were 175.81 and 145.35, respectively, for the male and 170.61 and 140.11, respectively, for the female. The thickness and the breadth of the human skull are not normally distributed; and in general, females have thicker skulls than males; but males have wider breadth and longer A-P length than females. read more read less

This paper presents a literature review of test methods that have been used to provide data for development of rollover occupant protection systems, including rollover sensor algorithms, test methodologies, and restraint-system performance. Test methods reviewed in this paper include SAE J2114, side curb trip, corkscrew ramp, critical sliding velocity, deceleration rollover sled, ditch/embankment, soil trip and various misuse tests. Historical development, procedure, application and the experience with these methods are discussed. Pros and cons of these test methodologies are summarised in relation to the rollover sensing algorithm and rollover occupant protection system development. Remarks related to test methodologies are made and issues pertaining to repeatability and dummy performance are discussed. Various component test methodologies are also reviewed and a newly developed component test device is presented. A brief review of CAE methodology and trends in test methods are also given. read more read less

Automotive safety is an important criterion for consumers, manufacturers and government regulators when considering vehicle design and driver operation. The availability of a driver classification system, based on in-vehicle operating data, offers a useful tool to create a safer transportation environment. In this paper, several mathematical strategies will be presented to analyse collected vehicle data for driver classification. A group of test subjects were supplied in-vehicle data acquisition devices and requested to drive their normal schedules. The collected data was analysed off-line and a driver classification system was proposed. Representative results will be presented and discussed to demonstrate the concept. read more read less
