TL;DR: In this paper, the diffusion and sorption behaviors of cationic Cs+ and Na+, anionic I− and neutral tritiated water (HTO) tracers in compacted montmorillonite were investigated as a function of porewater salinity.

Abstract: Five models have been used to estimate the oceanic dispersion of 137Cs from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant during March and April 2011, following the accident on March 11, 2011. The total discharged activity of 137Cs is estimated to be 2 to 15 petabequerels. A weak southward current along the Fukushima coast was responsible for the initial transport direction, while mesoscale eddy-like structures and surface-current systems contributed to dispersion in areas beyond the continental shelf. Most of the discrepancies among the models in April are caused by differences in how the mesoscale current structures off the Ibaraki coast are represented.

TL;DR: A 40 MeV proton bunch is obtained, which is a record for laser pulse with energy less than 10 J, and the efficiency for generation of protons with kinetic energy above 15 MeV is 0.1%.
Abstract: Using a high-contrast (1010:1) and high-intensity (1021 W/cm2) laser pulse with the duration of 40 fs from an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification/Ti:sapphire laser, a 40 MeV proton bunch is obtained, which is a record for laser pulse with energy less than 10 J. The efficiency for generation of protons with kinetic energy above 15 MeV is 0.1%.

TL;DR: The commissioning studies and an application to a uranium compound with the helicity-switching mode of a new twin-helical undulator installed in soft X-ray beamline BL23SU at SPring-8 are described.
Abstract: The soft X-ray beamline BL23SU at SPring-8 has undergone an upgrade with a twin-helical undulator of in-vacuum type to enhance the experimental capabilities of the endstations. The new light source with a fast helicity-switching operation allows not only the data throughput but also the sensitivity in X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) to be improved. The operational performance and potential are described by presenting XMCD results of paramagnetic β-US2 measured with a 10 T superconducting magnet.

TL;DR: In this article, the velocity filter SHIP of GSI was used as separator for the transfer products while the isotope identification was performed via the α decay chains of the nuclei, revealing that multinucleon transfer reactions together with here applied fast and sensitive separation and detection techniques are promising for the synthesis of new isotopes in the region of heaviest nuclei.
