Abstract: Soil P composition can be conveniently determined in alkaline extracts using solution 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, but spectral assignments are based on fragmentary literature reports of model compounds in various extraction matrices. We report solution 31P NMR chemical shifts of model P compounds, including inorganic phosphates, orthophosphate monoesters and diesters, phosphonates, and organic polyphosphates, determined in a standardized soil P extractant (0.25 M NaOH and 0.05 M EDTA). Signals from nucleic acids (DNA –0.37 ppm, RNA 0.54 ppm) and phospholipids (phosphatidyl choline 0.78 ppm, phosphatidyl serine 1.57 ppm, phosphatidyl ethanolamine 1.75 ppm) could be differentiated in the orthophosphate diester region, and were identified in a sample of cultured soil bacteria. Inorganic and organic polyphosphates could be differentiated by the presence of a signal at –9 ppm from the a phosphate of organic polyphosphates. Some orthophosphate diesters, notably RNA and phosphatidyl choline, degraded rapidly to orthophosphate monoesters in NaOH-EDTA although DNA, other phospholipids, and orthophosphate monoesters were more stable. Changes in probe temperature had a marked influence on signal intensities and the relative magnitude of signals from orthophosphate monoesters and inorganic orthophosphate, and we suggest that solution 31P NMR spectroscopy of soil extracts be performed at 20°C.

Abstract: Inhibitors of alpha(v)beta(3) and alpha(v)beta(5) integrin have entered clinical trials as antiangiogenic agents for cancer treatment but generally have been unsuccessful. Here we present in vivo evidence that low (nanomolar) concentrations of RGD-mimetic alpha(v)beta(3) and alpha(v)beta(5) inhibitors can paradoxically stimulate tumor growth and tumor angiogenesis. We show that low concentrations of these inhibitors promote VEGF-mediated angiogenesis by altering alpha(v)beta(3) integrin and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 trafficking, thereby promoting endothelial cell migration to VEGF. The proangiogenic effects of low concentrations of RGD-mimetic integrin inhibitors could compromise their efficacy as anticancer agents and have major implications for the use of RGD-mimetic compounds in humans.

Abstract: Several new treatment modalities with different mechanisms of action have been studied in patients with Behcet's syndrome (BS). The aim of the current effort was to update the recommendations in the light of these new data under the auspices of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) Standing Committee for Clinical Affairs. A task force was formed that included BS experts from different specialties including internal medicine, rheumatology, ophthalmology, dermatology, neurology, gastroenterology, oral health medicine and vascular surgery, along with a methodologist, a health professional, two patients and two fellows in charge of the systematic literature search. Research questions were determined using a Delphi approach. EULAR standardised operating procedures was used as the framework. Results of the systematic literature review were presented to the task force during a meeting. The former recommendations were modified or new recommendations were formed after thorough discussions followed by voting. The recommendations on the medical management of mucocutaneous, joint, eye, vascular, neurological and gastrointestinal involvement of BS were modified; five overarching principles and a new recommendation about the surgical management of vascular involvement were added. These updated, evidence-based recommendations are intended to help physicians caring for patients with BS. They also attempt to highlight the shortcomings of the available clinical research with the aim of proposing an agenda for further research priorities.

Abstract: Extended sources of far-infrared emission superposed on the zodiacal and galactic backgrounds are found at high galactic latitudes and near the ecliptic plane. Clouds of interstellar dust at color temperatures as high as 35 K account for much of this complex structure, but the relationship to H I column density is not simple. Other features of the extended emission show the existence of warm structures within the solar system. Three bands of dust clouds at temperatures of 150-200 K appear within 10 deg on both sides of the ecliptic plane. Their ecliptic latitudes and derived distances suggest that they are associated with the main asteroid belt. A third component of the 100-micron cirrus, poorly correlated with H I, may represent cold material in the outer solar system or a new component of the interstellar medium.
