Monovalent and divalent ion sorption in a cation exchange membrane based on cross-linked poly (p-styrene sulfonate-co-divinylbenzene)

TL;DR: In this paper, MgCl2 and CaCl2 sorption in a commercial cross-linked, styrene-divinylbenzene cation exchange membrane (CEM) with fixed sulfonate groups was measured and compared with NaCl, LiCl and KCl in the same material.
Journal ArticleDOI

Atomistic Understanding of Zeolite Nanosheets for Water Desalination

TL;DR: In this article, nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to systematically study zeolites as RO membranes and establish fundamental structure-performance relationships, showing that zeolite nanosheets can achieve a high salt rejection rate close to 100% while allowing nearly 2 orders of magnitude higher water permeability than currently available membranes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Kinetics and energetics trade-off in reverse osmosis desalination with different configurations

TL;DR: In this article, the relationship between the average water flux and the specific energy consumption (SEC) was quantified using analytical expressions to quantify the energy consumption of single stage, two stage, and closed circuit reverse osmosis (RO) processes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Acyl-chloride quenching following interfacial polymerization to modulate the water permeability, selectivity, and surface charge of desalination membranes

TL;DR: In this article, the quenching of residual acyl-chloride groups in nascent polyamide films is performed using amine, ammonia, and alcohol solutions, including common alcohol solvents such as methanol and ethanol.

The pilot study.

TL;DR: A randomized controlled experiment is designed to test whether access to affordable day care (in the form of subsidies, for example) would incentivize Saudi mothers to search actively for employment and to remain employed once they are hired.
