Chemistry and biochemistry of 4-hydroxynonenal, malonaldehyde and related aldehydes.

TL;DR: This review provides a comprehensive summary on the chemical properties of 4-hydroxyalkenals and malonaldehyde, the mechanisms of their formation and their occurrence in biological systems and methods for their determination, as well as the many types of biological activities described so far.
Journal ArticleDOI

The role of lipid peroxidation and antioxidants in oxidative modification of LDL.

TL;DR: A comprehensive survey on the compositional properties of LDL relevant for its susceptibility to oxidation, on the mechanism and kinetics of LDL oxidation, and on the chemical and physico-chemical properties of HDL oxidized by exposure to copper ions is provided.

A review of recent studies on malondialdehyde as toxic molecule and biological marker of oxidative stress

TL;DR: The physiological origin of MDA is described, its toxicity is highlighted, and the most common methods of detection are insufficiently sensitive and disturbed by interference coming from related species or overestimation derived from stressing analysis conditions.

Conjugated linoleic acid and atherosclerosis in rabbits

TL;DR: Interestingly, the LDL cholesterol to LDL cholesterol ratio and total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio were significantly reduced in CLA-fed rabbits, and Examination of the aortas of CLA- fed rabbits showed less atherosclerosis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Lipoperoxides in plasma as measured by liquid-chromatographic separation of malondialdehyde-thiobarbituric acid adduct.

TL;DR: This assay of plasma lipoperoxides involves hydrolysis in dilute H3PO4 at 100 degrees C; complexation of malondialdehyde (MDA), a Hydrolysis product, with thiobarbituric acid (TBA); methanol precipitation of plasma proteins; fractionation of the protein-free extract on a C18 column; and spectrophotometric quantification of the MDA-TBA adduct at 532 nm.

The thiobarbituric acid assay of sialic acids.

TL;DR: This chapter discusses the different aspects of thiobarbituric acid assay of sialic acid, which is suitable for measuring the release of bound sialoic acid by sialidase and hydrolysis of sIALic acid-containing material must be carried out for the measurement of total sialsic acids.

The thiobarbituric acid reaction and the autoxidations of polyunsaturated fatty acid methyl esters.

TL;DR: The mechanism of oxidation of methylene-interrupted trienes, tetraenes, pentaenes, and hexaenes postulates an additional step in chain propagation involving intramolecular rearrangement of the hydroperoxy free radical to a free radical bearing a closed five-membered ring peroxide.
