TLDR
In this article, the results of observations of submesoscale eddies (with a diameter of 2-8 km) on the narrow Black Sea shelf are presented, using traditional and new methods of hydrophysical investigations.Abstract:
The results of observations of submesoscale eddies (with a diameter of 2–8 km) on the narrow Black Sea shelf are presented. These observations were carried out in the Gelendzhik region in the autumn seasons of 2007–2008 using traditional and new methods of hydrophysical investigations. The mechanisms of generation of such eddies are discussed.read more

Drivers of phytoplankton blooms in the northeastern Black Sea
V. A. Silkin,L. A. Pautova,M. Giordano,V. K. Chasovnikov,S.V. Vostokov,O. I. Podymov,Svetlana Pakhomova,L.V. Moskalenko +7 more
TL;DR: This work has compiled 15 years of measurements from which the existence emerges of a tight link between phytoplankton species dominance and nutrients concentrations, and shows how seasonal changes of dominant species influence the structure of the food web.

TL;DR: In this article, the first data on the creation of the subsatellite polygon on the Black Sea shelf and continental slope in the Gelendzhik area is presented and the plans for maintaining and developing this polygon are presented.

Intense ventilation of the Black Sea pycnocline due to vertical turbulent exchange in the Rim Current area
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present new observational data, which indicate that deep ventilation events in the aerobic zone extending across the upper part of the permanent pycnocline may occur sporadically in the Rim Current area, even during relatively warm seasons, when the seasonal thermocline is still notable.

Physical mechanisms of submesoscale eddies generation: evidences from laboratory modeling and satellite data in the Black Sea
A. G. Zatsepin,Arseny A. Kubryakov,Arseny A. Kubryakov,A. A. Aleskerova,Dmitry Elkin,Olga N. Kukleva +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the observed evidence of the implementation of three different mechanisms of submesoscale eddies generation in the Black Sea previously studied by the field research and laboratory modeling is presented.

Simulations of currents and pollution transport in the coastal waters of Big Sochi
TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method for modeling the transport of pollutants over the Black Sea water basin adjacent to Big Sochi, which is based on the application of the Institute of Numerical Mathematics Ocean Model (INMOM).

Seasonal, interannual, and mesoscale variability of the Black Sea upper layer circulation derived from altimeter data
TL;DR: In this paper, TopEX/Poseidon and ERS altimeter data comprising the period from May 1992 to May 1999 are assimilated into a shallow water model for providing a dynamically consistent interpretation of the sea surface height variations and estimation of the temporal and spatial characteristics of the upper layer circulation in the Black Sea.

North Atlantic Ocean surface currents
TL;DR: In this paper, surface drifters are used to investigate the 15 m circulation of the North Atlantic Ocean and reveal a complex series of quasi-permanent eddies, meanders, and recirculation patterns.

TL;DR: In this paper, a large anticyclonic eddy (80-90 km in diameter) centered at 43°N, 37°E has been the subject of complex investigation in the summer-autumn of 1999 based on measurements carried out during the “Black Sea'99” expedition on board of R/V Akvanavt (CTD surveys, deployment of Argos-tracked drifters), analysis of satellite imagery, and using altimetric sea level anomaly maps from merged TOPEX/POSEIDON and ERS-2 satellite data

On the mechanisms of the Black Sea circulation
TL;DR: In this paper, two types of models are discussed: GCM with horizontal resolutionΔλ = 1°, Δφ = 0.5° and 12 levels; and EGCM with a horizontal resolution Δλ = 20′,Δφ= 10′ on the same levels.
