The Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia: reliability, sensitivity, and comparison with a standard neurocognitive battery.

TLDR
The BACS was found to be as sensitive to cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia as a standard battery of tests that required over 2 h to administer and to be highly correlated with the standard battery composite scores in patients and healthy controls.

The relationship between neurocognition and social cognition with functional outcomes in schizophrenia: a meta-analysis.

TL;DR: Overall, social cognition was more strongly associated with community functioning than neurocognition, with the strongest associations being between theory of mind and functional outcomes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Identification of separable cognitive factors in schizophrenia.

TL;DR: Empirical evidence for cognitive performance dimensions in schizophrenia was evaluated and seven separable cognitive factors were replicable across studies and represent fundamental dimensions of cognitive deficit in schizophrenia: Speed of Processing, Attention/Vigilance, Working Memory, Verbal Learning and Memory, Visual Learning and memory, Reasoning and Problem Solving, and Verbal Comprehension.
Journal ArticleDOI

Overlooking the obvious: a meta-analytic comparison of digit symbol coding tasks and other cognitive measures in schizophrenia.

TL;DR: The 5-minute digit symbol coding task, reliable and easy to administer, taps an information processing inefficiency that is a central feature of the cognitive deficit in schizophrenia and deserves systematic investigation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Neuropsychological impairments in schizophrenia: Integration of performance-based and brain imaging findings.

TL;DR: The most severe impairments are apparent in episodic memory and executive control processes, evident on a background of a generalized cognitive deficit as discussed by the authors, which potentially represent genetic liability to the disorder, as similar, yet milder, impairments were evident in schizophrenia patients even before the onset of psychotic symptoms.

“Mini-mental state”: A practical method for grading the cognitive state of patients for the clinician

TL;DR: A simplified, scored form of the cognitive mental status examination, the “Mini-Mental State” (MMS) which includes eleven questions, requires only 5-10 min to administer, and is therefore practical to use serially and routinely.

A practical method for grading the cognitive state of patients for the clinician

TL;DR: The Mini-Mental State (MMS) as mentioned in this paper is a simplified version of the standard WAIS with eleven questions and requires only 5-10 min to administer, and is therefore practical to use serially and routinely.

A new rating scale for Alzheimer's disease.

TL;DR: A new rating instrument, the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale, was designed specifically to evaluate the severity of cognitive and noncognitive behavioral dysfunctions characteristic of persons with Alzheimer's disease.
Journal ArticleDOI

What are the functional consequences of neurocognitive deficits in schizophrenia

TL;DR: Verbal memory and vigilance appear to be necessary for adequate functional outcome in schizophrenic patients and may prevent patients from attaining optimal adaptation and hence act as "neurocognitive rate-limiting factors."
