Abstract
The Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2), is the latest atmospheric reanalysis of the modern satellite era produced by NASA’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO). MERRA-2 assimilates observation types not available to its predecessor, MERRA, and includes updates to the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) model and analysis scheme so as to provide a viable ongoing climate analysis beyond MERRA’s terminus. While addressing known limitations of MERRA, MERRA-2 is also intended to be a development milestone for a future integrated Earth system analysis (IESA) currently under development at GMAO. This paper provides an overview of the MERRA-2 system and various performance metrics. Among the advances in MERRA-2 relevant to IESA are the assimilation of aerosol observations, several improvements to the representation of the stratosphere including ozone, and improved representations of cryospheric processes. Other improvements in the quality of M...

Emerging trends in global freshwater availability.

TL;DR: Analysis of 2002–2016 GRACE satellite observations of terrestrial water storage reveals substantial changes in freshwater resources globally, which are driven by natural and anthropogenic climate variability and human activities.

Anthropogenic drivers of 2013–2017 trends in summer surface ozone in China

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of meteorological variability on ozone trends was investigated using a multiple linear regression model and the residual of this regression showed increasing ozone trends of 1-3 ppbv a−1 in megacity clusters of eastern China that they attributed to changes in anthropogenic emissions.

The MERRA-2 Aerosol Reanalysis, 1980 Onward. Part I: System Description and Data Assimilation Evaluation

TL;DR: This first of a pair of studies documents the MERRA-2 aerosol assimilation, including a description of the prognostic model, aerosol emissions, and the quality control of ingested observations, and provides initial validation and evaluation of the analyzed AOD fields.

Changing state of Arctic sea ice across all seasons

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the ongoing loss of Arctic sea ice across all seasons and found that recent anomalies in spring and winter sea ice coverage have been more significant than any observed drop in summer sea ice extent.

The Version 2 Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) Monthly Precipitation Analysis (1979-Present)

TL;DR: The Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) version 2 Monthly Precise Analysis as discussed by the authors is a merged analysis that incorporates precipitation estimates from low-orbit satellite microwave data, geosynchronous-orbit-satellite infrared data, and rain gauge observations.
