Inhibition of Ras for cancer treatment: the search continues
TL;DR: An overview of past and ongoing strategies to inhibit oncogenic Ras in cancer is presented and genome-wide unbiased genetic screens have identified novel directions for future anti-Ras drug discovery.
Journal ArticleDOI
Activation of RalA is critical for Ras-induced tumorigenesis of human cells
Kian-Huat Lim,Antonio T. Baines,James J. Fiordalisi,Michail Shipitsin,Larry A. Feig,Adrienne D. Cox,Channing J. Der,Christopher M. Counter +7 more
TL;DR: RalGEFs were recently shown to be critical for Ras-mediated transformed and tumorigenic growth of human cells, and it is shown that the oncogenic activity of these proteins is propagated by activation of one RalGEF substrate, RalA, but blunted by another closely related substrate,RalB, and that theoncogenic signaling requires binding of the RalBP1 and exocyst subunit effector proteins.
Journal ArticleDOI
A case-based approach increases student learning outcomes and comprehension of cellular respiration concepts.
TL;DR: Investigation of student learning outcomes using a case‐based approach focused on cellular respiration found students who used the case study exhibited a significantly greater learning gain, and demonstrated use of higher‐order thinking skills.
Journal ArticleDOI
The oncogenic kinase Pim-1 is modulated by K-Ras signaling and mediates transformed growth and radioresistance in human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cells
Dapeng Xu,Stephen A. Allsop,Sam M. Witherspoon,Jared L. Snider,Jen Jen Yeh,James J. Fiordalisi,Catherine D. White,Daniel Williams,Adrienne D. Cox,Antonio T. Baines +9 more
TL;DR: It is shown that Pim-1 is required for PDAC cell growth, invasion and radioresistance downstream of oncogenic K-Ras, and this work helps elucidate the role of PIM-1 in PDAC growth transformation and validate Pin-1 kinase as a potential molecular marker for mutated K- Ras activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inhibition of oncogenic Pim-3 kinase modulates transformed growth and chemosensitizes pancreatic cancer cells to gemcitabine
Dapeng Xu,Michael G. Cobb,Lily Gavilano,Sam M. Witherspoon,Daniel Williams,Catherine D. White,Pietro Taverna,Brian K. Bednarski,Hong Jin Kim,Albert S. Baldwin,Antonio T. Baines,Antonio T. Baines +11 more
TL;DR: Combining drug therapies that inhibit Pim kinases, such as Pim-3, with chemotherapeutic agents, to aid in decreasing chemoresistance in pancreatic cancer are suggested.
