Seagrass ecosystems as a globally significant carbon stock
James W. Fourqurean,Carlos M. Duarte,Carlos M. Duarte,Hilary Kennedy,Núria Marbà,Marianne Holmer,Miguel Ángel Mateo,Eugenia T. Apostolaki,Gary A. Kendrick,Dorte Krause-Jensen,Karen J. McGlathery,Oscar Serrano +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, an analysis of organic carbon data from just under one thousand seagrass meadows indicates that, globally, these systems could store between 4.2 and 8.4 Pg carbon.
Journal ArticleDOI
Substantial role of macroalgae in marine carbon sequestration
TL;DR: In this article, a review of the published literature suggests that macroalgae may play an important role in carbon sequestration, and they propose two main modes for the transport of macro-algae to the deep ocean and sediments: macroalgal material drifting through submarine canyons, and the sinking of negatively buoyant macro-gal detritus.
Journal ArticleDOI
The future of Blue Carbon science
Peter I. Macreadie,Andrea Anton,John A. Raven,John A. Raven,John A. Raven,Nicola Beaumont,Rod M. Connolly,Daniel A. Friess,Jeffrey J. Kelleway,Hilary Kennedy,Tomohiro Kuwae,Paul S. Patrick Megonigal,Daniel Murdiyarso,Daniel Murdiyarso,Bayden D. Russell,Rui Santos,Oscar Serrano,Brian R. Silliman,Kenta Watanabe,Carlos M. Duarte +42 more
TL;DR: The authors identify the top-ten unresolved questions in the field and find that most questions relate to the precise role blue carbon can play in mitigating climate change and the most effective management actions in maximising this.
Journal ArticleDOI
Can seaweed farming play a role in climate change mitigation and adaptation
TL;DR: The seaweed aquaculture can also contribute to climate change adaptation by damping wave energy and protecting shorelines, and by elevating pH and supplying oxygen to the waters, thereby locally reducing the effects of ocean acidification and deoxygenation as discussed by the authors.
European seagrasses: an introduction to monitoring and management
TL;DR: Borum et al. as mentioned in this paper presented an introduction to monitoring and management of European seagrasses, including an overview of the M&MS project's European Seagrass Monitoring and Management project.
