Journal ArticleDOI
Animal models of acute lung injury.
TL;DR: The goal of this review is to summarize the strengths and weaknesses of existing models of lung injury and help guide investigators in the design and interpretation of animal studies of acute lung injury.
Journal ArticleDOI
An Official American Thoracic Society Workshop Report: Features and Measurements of Experimental Acute Lung Injury in Animals
Gustavo Matute-Bello,Gregory P. Downey,Bethany B. Moore,Steve D. Groshong,Michael A. Matthay,Arthur S. Slutsky,Wolfgang M. Kuebler +6 more
TL;DR: This list of features and measurements of ALI is intended as a guide for investigators, and ultimately investigators should choose the particular measurements that best suit the experimental questions being addressed as well as take into consideration any unique aspects of the experimental design.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neutrophil Apoptosis in the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Gustavo Matute-Bello,W. Conrad Liles,Frank Radella,Kenneth P. Steinberg,John T. Ruzinski,Mechthild Jonas,Emil Y. Chi,Leonard D. Hudson,Thomas R. Martin +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used morphologic criteria to count apoptotic neutrophil (PMN) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) of 35 patients on days 1, 3, 7, 14, and 21 of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
Journal Article
Soluble Fas Ligand Induces Epithelial Cell Apoptosis in Humans with Acute Lung Injury (ARDS)
Gustavo Matute-Bello,W C Liles,Kenneth P. Steinberg,Peter A. Kiener,Steve Mongovin,Emil Y. Chi,Mechthild Jonas,Thomas R. Martin +7 more
TL;DR: It is found that soluble Fas ligand (sFasL) is present in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of patients before and after the onset of ARDS, and this provides the first evidence that FasL can be released as a biologically active, death-inducing mediator capable of inducing apoptosis of cells of the distal pulmonary epithelium during acute lung injury.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fas (CD95) Induces Alveolar Epithelial Cell Apoptosis in Vivo: Implications for Acute Pulmonary Inflammation
Gustavo Matute-Bello,Robert K. Winn,Mechthild Jonas,Emil Y. Chi,Thomas R. Martin,W. Conrad Liles +5 more
TL;DR: F Fas activation in vivo results in acute alveolar epithelial injury and lung inflammation, and may be important in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury.
