Journal ArticleDOI
Quantitative aspects of reactive gliosis: A review
TL;DR: There are different biological mechanisms for induction and maintenance of reactive gliosis, which, depending on the kind of tissue damage, result in different expressions of the gliotic response.
Journal ArticleDOI
Expanded polyglutamine stretches interact with TAFII130, interfering with CREB-dependent transcription.
Takayoshi Shimohata,Toshihiro Nakajima,Mitsunori Yamada,Chiharu Uchida,Osamu Onodera,Satoshi Naruse,T. Kimura,Reiji Koide,Kenkichi Nozaki,Yasuteru Sano,Hiroshi Ishiguro,Kumi Sakoe,Takayuki Ooshima,Aki Sato,Takeshi Ikeuchi,Mutsuo Oyake,Toshiya Sato,Yasuyuki Aoyagi,Isao Hozumi,Toshiharu Nagatsu,Yoshihisa Takiyama,Masatoyo Nishizawa,Jun Goto,Ichiro Kanazawa,Irwin Davidson,Naoko Tanese,Hitoshi Takahashi,Shoji Tsuji +27 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that interference of transcription by the binding of TAFII130 with expanded polyQ stretches is involved in the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration.
Journal ArticleDOI
Suppression of aggregate formation and apoptosis by transglutaminase inhibitors in cells expressing truncated DRPLA protein with an expanded polyglutamine stretch.
Shuichi Igarashi,Reiji Koide,Takayoshi Shimohata,Mitsunori Yamada,Yasuko Hayashi,Hiroki Takano,Hidetoshi Date,Mutsuo Oyake,Toshiya Sato,Aki Sato,Shigekimi Egawa,Takeshi Ikeuchi,Hajime Tanaka,Ryoichi Nakano,Keiko Tanaka,Isao Hozumi,Takashi Inuzuka,Hitoshi Takahashi,Shoji Tsuji +18 more
TL;DR: It is found that truncated DRPLA proteins containing an expanded polyglutamine stretch form filamentous peri- and intranuclear aggregates and undergo apoptosis, suggesting involvement of a transglutaminase reaction and providing a potential basis for the development of therapeutic measures for CAG-repeat expansion diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Patterns of levels of biological metals in CSF differ among neurodegenerative diseases
Isao Hozumi,Tatsuya Hasegawa,Akiko Honda,Kazuhiro Ozawa,Yuichi Hayashi,Kazunori Hashimoto,Kazunori Hashimoto,Megumi Yamada,Akihiro Koumura,Takeo Sakurai,Akio Kimura,Yuji Tanaka,Masahiko Satoh,Takashi Inuzuka +13 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that Cu and Zn in particular play important roles in the onset and/or progression of ALS, AD, and PD and Cu-chelating agents and modulators of Cu andZn such as metallothionein (MT) can be new candidates for the treatment of ALS.
Journal ArticleDOI
An immunologic abnormality common to Bickerstaff's brain stem encephalitis and Fisher's syndrome
TL;DR: The finding that BBE and FS shared common autoantibody suggests that autoimmune mechanism common to FS is likely in BBE, and that both conditions represent a distinct disease with a wide spectrum of symptoms that include ophthalmoplegia and ataxia.
