Three times out of Asia Minor: the phylogeography of Arabis alpina L. (Brassicaceae).
Marcus A. Koch,Christiane Kiefer,Dorothee Ehrich,Johannes C. Vogel,Christian Brochmann,Klaus Mummenhoff +5 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that A. alpina originated in Asia Minor less than 2 million years ago based on synonymous mutation rates of different genes (plastidic matK, nuclear adh and chs), and its genetic diversity was relatively high with numerous unique haplotypes, but almost without geographic structure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Conservation policy: Listen to the voices of experience
TL;DR: The intergovernmental body for biodiversity must draw on a much broader range of knowledge and stakeholders than the IPCC, say Esther Turnhout and colleagues.
Journal ArticleDOI
Polyploidy, phylogeography and Pleistocene refugia of the rockfern Asplenium ceterach: evidence from chloroplast DNA.
Steven A. Trewick,Mary Morgan-Richards,Stephen J. Russell,Sally Henderson,Fred Rumsey,I. Pinter,John A. Barrett,Mary Gibby,Johannes C. Vogel +8 more
TL;DR: The authors' cpDNA and ploidy data indicate at least six independent origins of polyploids, which suggests long‐term persistence of populations in the southern Mediterranean.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mapping the biosphere: exploring species to understand the origin, organization and sustainability of biodiversity
Quentin D. Wheeler,Sandra Knapp,Dennis W. M. Stevenson,J. Stevenson,Stan Blum,Brian M. Boom,Gary G. Borisy,James L. Buizer,M. R. de Carvalho,A. Cibrian,Michael J. Donoghue,Vinson P. Doyle,E. M. Gerson,Catherine H. Graham,P. Graves,Sara Graves,Robert P. Guralnick,Andrew Hamilton,James Hanken,Wayne Law,Diana L. Lipscomb,Thomas E. Lovejoy,Holly Miller,James S. Miller,Shahid Naeem,Michael J. Novacek,Lawrence M. Page,Norman I. Platnick,Holly Porter-Morgan,Peter H. Raven,M. A. Solis,Antonio G. Valdecasas,S. Van Der Leeuw,Alejandra Vasco,Niki Vermeulen,Johannes C. Vogel,Ramona Walls,Edward O. Wilson,James B. Woolley +38 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that an ambitious goal to describe 10 million species in less than 50 years is attainable based on the strength of 250 years of progress, worldwide collections, existing experts, technological innovation and collaborative teamwork.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chloroplast Phylogeny of Asplenioid Ferns based on rbcL and trnL-F Spacer Sequences (Polypodiidae, Aspleniaceae) and its Implications for Biogeography
Harald Schneider,Harald Schneider,Steve J. Russell,Cymon J. Cox,Freek T. Bakker,Sally Henderson,Fred Rumsey,John Barrett,Mary Gibby,Johannes C. Vogel +9 more
TL;DR: A phylogenetic framework from which the historical biogeography of asplenioid ferns can be inferred for Europe and North America is presented, showing a separation of the deeper branches into tropical and temperate clades.
