Exploring the Principal's Contribution to School Effectiveness: 1980‐1995∗

TLDR
This paper reviewed research from 1980-1995 exploring the relationship between principal leadership and student achievement and found that principals exercise a measurable, though indirect, effect on school effectiveness and student performance, while this indirect effect is relatively small, it is statistically significant and supports the general belief among educators that principals contribute to school effectiveness.
Abstract
This article reviews research from 1980‐1995 exploring the relationship between principal leadership and student achievement. The focuses is on the substantive findings that emerged from the review. Earlier reports focused on conceptual and methodological issues. The general pattern of results drawn from this review supports the belief that principals exercise a measurable, though indirect effect on school effectiveness and student achievement. While this indirect effect is relatively small, it is statistically significant and supports the general belief among educators that principals contribute to school effectiveness and improvement. Moreover, the review suggests that previously described discrepancies in research results may be explained by the conceptual and methodological tools employed by researchers. We also emphasize the limitations of these studies. Even taken as a group they do not resolve the most important theoretical and practical issues concerning the means by which principals achi...

The Influence of School Leadership on Student Outcomes

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the effects of both transformational and instructional leadership styles on improving student outcomes through three key points of focus: teaching and learning, the collaborative establishment of school goals and vision, and an awareness of and engagement with external forces affecting their school.

How school principals influence student learning

TL;DR: This article measured the effect of principals on gains in primary test scores in North Carolina and estimate the standard deviation of principals' value added to be 0.12-0.17, and found that replacing the current principal has little effect on non-test-score school inputs and outcomes regardless of the new principal's value added.

Troops to Teachers as School Administrators: A National Study of Principal Quality

TL;DR: The authors found that teachers who have entered education through Troops to Teachers funding make a measurable impact on student learning and tend to work in high-poverty, high-minority schools.

Communities of parental engagement: new foundations for school leaders’ work

TL;DR: This paper presented a fourth-generation model of school-family linkages, one anchored in understandings of schools as communities as opposed to schools as institutions, and extended the narrative of school parent relationships by highlighting "norms of community" school leaders can cultivate to promote membership, partnership and ownership.
