Journal ArticleDOI
Deep, diverse and definitely different: unique attributes of the world's largest ecosystem
Eva Ramirez-Llodra,Angelika Brandt,Roberto Danovaro,B. De Mol,Elva Escobar,Christopher R. German,Lisa A. Levin,P. Martinez Arbizu,Lenaick Menot,Pål Buhl-Mortensen,Bhavani Narayanaswamy,Craig R. Smith,Derek P. Tittensor,Paul A. Tyler,Ann Vanreusel,Michael Vecchione +15 more
TL;DR: A review of deep-sea habitats and their fauna can be found in this paper, where the authors discuss threats from anthropogenic activities to deep sea habitats and faunal communities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biological structures as a source of habitat heterogeneity and biodiversity on the deep ocean margins
Lene Buhl-Mortensen,Ann Vanreusel,Andrew J. Gooday,Lisa A. Levin,Imants G. Priede,Pål Buhl-Mortensen,Hendrik Gheerardyn,Nicola J. King,Maarten Raes +8 more
TL;DR: The structural attributes and biotic effects of the habitats that corals, sea pens, sponges and xenophyophores offer other organisms and the biotic structures they create to habitat heterogeneity and diversity on the deep continental margins are highlighted.
Journal ArticleDOI
Habitat complexity and bottom fauna composition at different scales on the continental shelf and slope of northern Norway
Lene Buhl-Mortensen,Pål Buhl-Mortensen,Margaret F.J. Dolan,Jennifer Dannheim,Valérie K. Bellec,Børge Holte +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the MAREANO database is used to study fauna response to environmental heterogeneity at two different spatial scales: (1) broad scale, megahabitat (1-10s km), based on information about megafauna taxa observed during video surveys in the Nordland/Troms area, (2) fine scale, mesohabitat, based on the information about species composition documented with video records and bottom sampling gear from the bank “Tromsoflaket”.
Journal ArticleDOI
Northeastern Atlantic cold-water coral reefs and climate
Norbert Frank,André Freiwald,Matthias López Correa,Claudia Wienberg,Markus Hermann Eisele,Dierk Hebbeln,David Van Rooij,Jean-Pierre Henriet,Christophe Colin,Tjeerd C.E. van Weering,Henk de Haas,Pål Buhl-Mortensen,J. Murray Roberts,Ben De Mol,Eric Douville,Dominique Blamart,Christine Hatté +16 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the U-series age patterns obtained on reef framework-forming cold-water corals collected over a nearly 6000km-long continental margin sector, extending from off Mauritania (17 degrees N; northwest Africa) to the southwestern Barents Sea (70 degrees N), northeastern Europe, reveal strong climate influences on the geographical distribution and sustained development of these ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Using EUNIS habitat classification for benthic mapping in European seas: Present concerns and future needs.
Ibon Galparsoro,David W. Connor,Ángel Borja,Annabelle Aish,Patrícia Amorim,Touria Bajjouk,Caroline Chambers,Roger Coggan,Guillaume Dirberg,Helen Ellwood,Douglas Evans,Kathleen L. Goodin,Anthony Grehan,Jannica Haldin,Kerry L. Howell,Chris Jenkins,Noëmie Michez,Giulia Mo,Pål Buhl-Mortensen,Bryony Pearce,Jacques Populus,Maria Salomidi,Francisco Arreguín Sánchez,Alberto Serrano,Emily J. Shumchenia,Fernando Tempera,Mickael Vasquez +26 more
TL;DR: An overview of the main discussion and conclusions of a workshop, organised by the MeshAtlantic project, focusing upon the experience in using the EUNIS habitats classification across different countries and seas, together with case studies.
