In this paper, the results of a study to develop natural zircon geochemical standards for calibrating the U-(Th)-Pb geochronometer and Hf isotopic analyses are reported.
Abstract
We report here the results of a study to develop natural zircon geochemical standards for calibrating the U-(Th)-Pb geochronometer and Hf isotopic analyses. Additional data were also collected for the major, minor and trace element contents of the three selected sample sets. A total of five large zircon grains (masses between 0.5 and 238 g) were selected for this study, representing three different suites of zircons with ages of 1065 Ma, 2.5 Ma and 0.9 Ma. Geochemical laboratories can obtain these materials by contacting Geostandards Newsletter.

The application of laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry to in situ U–Pb zircon geochronology

TL;DR: In this paper, a laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) was used for in situ U-Pb zircon geochronology.

The Composition of Zircon and Igneous and Metamorphic Petrogenesis

TL;DR: The importance of zircon in crustal evolution studies is underscored by its predominant use in U-Th-Pb geochronology and investigations of the temporal evolution of both the crust and lithospheric mantle as discussed by the authors.

The Hf isotope composition of cratonic mantle: LAM-MC-ICPMS analysis of zircon megacrysts in kimberlites

TL;DR: In this article, the isotopic composition of Hf has been measured in 124 mantle-derived zircon megacrysts from African, Siberian and Australian kimberlites, using a laser-ablation microprobe (LAM) and a multi-collector ICPMS.

Approximation of terrestrial lead isotope evolution by a two-stage model

TL;DR: In this paper, a two-stage model for terrestrial lead isotope evolution is proposed, which permits the age of the earth to be that of the meteorite system and also yields good model ages for samples of all ages.

Improved accuracy of U-Pb zircon ages by the creation of more concordant systems using an air abrasion technique

TL;DR: Abrasion combined with an improved paramagnetic separation technique eliminates 90 to 100 percent of discordance so that ages of unprecedented accuracy (± 1 to 3 my) can be achieved for virtually all 2700 my old zircon populations from plutonic or volcanic rocks as mentioned in this paper.

Rare-earth abundances in chondritic meteorites

TL;DR: In this article, 15 chondrites, including eight carbonaceous chondites, were analyzed for rare earth element abundances by isotope dilution, and the persistence of anomalies in chondritic materials relatively removed from direct condensational processes implies that anomalous components were introduced at a late stage of chondrite formation.

1989 compilation of working values and sample description for 272 geostandards

TL;DR: In this special issue, working values are reported for 272 international geostandards along with sample description and Think Geostan is a slogan that will be launched to set this problem in the limelight.
