TL;DR: Future development strategies should focus on antibiotics that are active against multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and Gram-negative bacteria, and include antibiotic-resistant bacteria responsible for community-acquired infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Emerging Importance of Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter Species and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia as Pathogens in Seriously Ill Patients: Geographic Patterns, Epidemiological Features, and Trends in the SENTRY Antimicrobial Surveillance Program (1997–1999)
Ana Cristina Gales,Ana Cristina Gales,R N Jones,K. R. Forward,Josefina Liñares,Helio S. Sader,Jan Verhoef +6 more
TL;DR: The geographic differences in resistance patterns among Acinetobacter species and S. maltophilia isolates observed in this study emphasize the importance of local surveillance in determining the most adequate therapy for acinetobacterial infections and the possible clonal, epidemic nature of occurrence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolates: Occurrence Rates, Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns, and Molecular Typing in the Global SENTRY Antimicrobial Surveillance Program, 1997–1999
TL;DR: Europe was the only region to show a significant decline in beta-lactam and aminoglycoside susceptibility rates, and isolates showing unique ribogroups were found in Europe, Latin America, and the United States, but clonal spread was documented in several medical centers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antimicrobial consumption and resistance in adult hospital inpatients in 53 countries: results of an internet-based global point prevalence survey.

TL;DR: Detailed data about antimicrobial prescribing and resistance from hospitals worldwide will help to improve the quality of antibiotic prescribing through education and practice changes, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries that have no tools to monitor antibiotic prescribing in hospitals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Contemporary Assessment of Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Methods for Polymyxin B and Colistin: Review of Available Interpretative Criteria and Quality Control Guidelines
TL;DR: An evaluation of in vitro susceptibility test methods for the polymyxin class drugs confirmed continued serious testing error with the disk diffusion method, the possible need for breakpoint adjustments, and the recalculation of disk diffusion QC ranges.
