Modelling storm impacts on beaches, dunes and barrier islands

TLDR
In this paper, a nearshore numerical model approach to assess the natural coastal response during time-varying storm and hurricane conditions, including dune erosion, overwash and breaching, is validated with a series of analytical, laboratory and field test cases.

The global flood protection savings provided by coral reefs

TL;DR: The authors show that the annual damages from flooding would double globally without reefs and they quantify where reefs provide the most protection to people and property.

The role of ecosystems in coastal protection: Adapting to climate change and coastal hazards

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to reduce the vulnerability of coastal communities to rising seas and coastal hazards through their multiple roles in wave attenuation, sediment capture, vertical accretion, erosion reduction and the mitigation of storm surge and debris movement.

The physical oceanography of the transport of floating marine debris

Erik van Sebille, +41 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors comprehensively discuss what is known about the different processes that govern the transport of floating marine plastic debris in both the open ocean and the coastal zones, based on the published literature and referring to insights from neighbouring fields such as oil spill dispersion, marine safety recovery, plankton connectivity, and others.

Wave Heights and Set-up in a Surf Zone

TL;DR: In this article, a theoretical model for wave heights and set-up in a surf zone is developed for wave flux, radiation stress, and energy dissipation, and the transitions immediately after breaking are analyzed and shown to be in accordance with the above mentioned ideas.

Two-dimensional time dependent hurricane overwash and erosion modeling at Santa Rosa Island

TL;DR: A 2DH numerical model which is capable of computing nearshore circulation and morphodynamics, including dune erosion, breaching and overwash, is used to simulate overwash caused by Hurricane Ivan (2004) on a barrier island as discussed by the authors.

On the non-linear energy transfer in a gravity-wave spectrum Part 1. General theory

TL;DR: In this article, the energy flux in a finite-depth gravity-wave spectrum resulting from weak non-linear couplings between the spectral components is evaluated by means of a perturbation method.

Storm Impact Scale for Barrier Islands

TL;DR: In this paper, a new scale is proposed that categorizes impacts to natural barrier islands resulting from tropical and extra-tropical storms, and the proposed scale is fundamentally different than existing storm-related scales in that the coupling between forcing processes and the geometry of the coast is explicitly included.
