Mesenchymal stem cells: Molecular characteristics and clinical applications

TL;DR: Basic features of MSC biology are reviewed including MSC characteristics in culture, homing mechanisms, differentiation capabilities and immune modulation, and their uses in orthopedic, autoimmune, and ischemic disorders are highlighted.

TGFβ/BMP Type I Receptors ALK1 and ALK2 Are Essential for BMP9-induced Osteogenic Signaling in Mesenchymal Stem Cells

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that only ALK1 and ALK2 mutants effectively inhibit BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation in vitro and ectopic ossification in MSC implantation assays, and this results strongly suggest that ALK 1 and AlK2 may play an important role in mediating BMP 9-induced bone marrow stromal differentiation.
