Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy

Daniel J. Klionsky, +1287 more
- 01 Apr 2012 -
TL;DR: These guidelines are presented for the selection and interpretation of methods for use by investigators who aim to examine macroautophagy and related processes, as well as for reviewers who need to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of papers that are focused on these processes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Regulation of autophagy by cytoplasmic p53

TL;DR: Evidence is provided of a key signalling pathway that links autophagy to the cancer-associated dysregulation of p53, which improved the survival of p 53-deficient cancer cells under conditions of hypoxia and nutrient depletion, allowing them to maintain high ATP levels.
Journal ArticleDOI

BH3-only proteins and BH3 mimetics induce autophagy by competitively disrupting the interaction between Beclin 1 and Bcl-2/Bcl-X(L).

TL;DR: A spatial organization of autophagy and apoptosis control in which BH3-only proteins exert two independent functions is suggested, by activating the mitochondrion-permeabilizing function of pro-apoptotic multidomain proteins from the Bcl-2 family.
