Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy (3rd edition)

Daniel J. Klionsky, +2522 more
- 21 Jan 2016 -
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a set of guidelines for the selection and interpretation of methods for use by investigators who aim to examine macro-autophagy and related processes, as well as for reviewers who need to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of papers that are focused on these processes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Chloroquine inhibits autophagic flux by decreasing autophagosome-lysosome fusion.

TL;DR: It is shown that CQ mainly inhibits autophagy by impairing autophagosome fusion with lysosomes rather than by affecting the acidity and/or degradative activity of this organelle.
Journal ArticleDOI

Functional interaction between autophagy and ciliogenesis

TL;DR: This work shows that part of the molecular machinery involved in ciliogenesis also participates in the early steps of the autophagic process, and proposes that basal autophagy regulates ciliary growth through the degradation of proteins required for intraflagellar transport.
Journal ArticleDOI

p53 represses autophagy in a cell cycle-dependent fashion.

TL;DR: It is shown by epistatic analysis that p53 inhibition results in a maximum level of autophagy that cannot be further enhanced by a variety of different autophagic inducers including lithium, tunicamycin-induced stress of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) or inhibition of Bcl-2 and BCl-XL with the BH3 mimetic ABT737.
